One vital skill that every Interior Designer needs to master is people management.

How do you handle indecisive clients - a new colour, different flooring, change of kitchen layout...one "small change" can turn into revised budgets, delayed deliveries, and weeks added to the project.

The answer is communication, trust, and clear boundaries.

✔️ Ensure decisions are clearly understood before work begins
✔️ Explain how change affects time, cost, and the overall design
✔️ Set clear revision limits from the beginning
✔️ Listen carefully, and keep clients informed

Clients often don't know what to expect. Take the lead by guiding the conversation, asking the right questions, showing a command of the process.

✔️ Sell the transformation
Don't just ask what they want. Help them see it, allow them imagine the space.

✔️ Be generous with your expertise
Share your best ideas right there in that first meeting. Clients are deciding whether you're an expert who genuinely understands their problems and has the solutions.

✔️ Show
3D visualisations, past projects, and examples of how you've solved a similar problem.

✔️ Find the human connection

Student Spotlight | From Passion to Profession

Sometimes the biggest career changes begin with a feeling you simply can't ignore. For Jill Simpson, creativity was calling!

After years in advertising, raising a family, and renovating homes across Europe, Jill realised the time was right.

She enrolled at the Academy, juggled responsibilities, and graduated with Distinction.

Today Jill is running her own interior design business (Jill Simpson Interiors), and has already been shortlisted for the BIID Interior Design Awards 2026.

In her own words:
"Creativity has always been an important part of my life, but studying interior design made me realise just how essential it is to my wellbeing and identity."

Every Interior Designer has heard this, just as every Interior Designer knows that a request like this, is just the beginning.

Clients will often describe how they want to feel.
"No colour" often means "I'm afraid of choosing wrong."
"Timeless" usually means "I don't want to regret this in five years."

A great designer hears the emotion beneath the words and can translate it into a design.

Did you know you could have a designer inside you just waiting to emerge?

Before becoming an Interior Designer, Jennifer Hockenhull worked in psychology and business management. But, the signs were always there.

From decorating her childhood bedroom, to renovating her first Victorian home, Jennifer began to see a pattern. Interiors had been bubbling inside her all along.

After becoming a mother, her priorities shifted. She aimed for a career that aligned well with her creativity, wellbeing and family life. And she was learning that Interior design was never only about making spaces look beautiful, it’s always been about how spaces make people feel.

Jennifer began building professional Interior Design skills, via the flexible Higher National Certificate course at the Academy. Today, she runs her own Interior Design business!

Her journey is proof that it is never too late to start. Sometimes, all it takes is to listen to the creative voice that has always been there.

Inside the Online Learning Centre, students are invited to:

Share a designer, interior, or historical space that inspires them.
Post an image, sketch, or example of their work.
Reflect on what stands out — the style, atmosphere, innovation, or story behind the design.
