Don’t let your drawing skills hold you back from a future in Interior Design.

Interior design sketches are in fact a tool to explore how furniture might sit in a room, how the proportions of a space work, or to quickly illustrate an idea to a client.
Its value is in what it communicates.

Sketching quickly and imperfectly is actually part of how good designers think. The act of drawing something out, even roughly, helps you notice details and questions you may have missed otherwise.

And drawing is only part of the process. Mood boards, photography, material references, floor plans, and models are also ways of developing and communicating an idea. Curiosity is a better starting point than a steady hand.

So if "I can't draw" has been the thing quietly talking you out of interior design, it was never a real barrier. It is actually a skill that can be learnt.

Interior Design is a skilled profession but the beauty of it is, it can all be learned.

Here are 7 essential skills that separate a creative hobbyist from a professional Interior Designer:

✔️ Creative visual thinking - understanding proportion, colour, texture, and composition.

✔️ Space planning - making the most out of every layout, size and function.

✔️ Drawings - sketches, mood boards, and floor plans.

✔️ Digital design skills – CAD, 3D modelling, and visualisation tools.

✔️ Materials - lighting, FF&E and construction knowledge.

✔️ Listening & client communication - presenting plans and understanding a brief.

✔️ Organisation & project management - budgets, timelines, and coordination.

Keep in mind that nobody arrives armed with all seven skills. Get started and as you grow as a student, you will emerge as a designer.

You can't walk into a room without mentally rearranging it? You save interior photos for no apparent reason? Sound familiar?

You may be a natural born designer.

While there is a skill set that every designer needs to learn, there are also soft skills that some people innately possess. Interior Design involves spatial planning, technical drawing and an understanding of textures and materials - but designers also need to be strong organisers, communicators, and problem-solvers.

It’s possible you are already halfway there and you don’t even know it!

Your instinct just needs a system in which to grow. How about refining that untethered enthusiasm and channeling it into real solid skills. It all culminates in a curated portfolio that becomes your calling card for professional work.

The only difference between you and a working designer is a decision to build on it.

Discover a study option that fits your lifestyle and your design ambitions.

Interior Designers who get it right, are the designers who have mastered the art of listening.

A designer's real job starts with asking the right questions, staying curious, and reading between the lines. What does the client actually need from the space? Why are they attracted to certain colours, styles or textures?

A client rarely says "I need better circulation between zones" - they say things like "I want it to feel like home". This is where you examine exactly what that means.

And it doesn't stop there. Great designers keep listening throughout the project - they listen to feedback, to hesitation, to the moment a client says "yes."

Listening is a soft skill that all creative professionals depend on. Use your instinct and practice empathy. Design will follow.

Have you ever walked into a room and it just didn’t feel right?
You’re thinking it’s the light, or the furniture size or the arrangement.

That's the instinct of an Interior Designer!

Interior design is about creating spaces where people move, live, and work.

And it all starts with an idea of how a space could feel. That feeling is created when you understand proportion, colour, texture and light. It’s plans, drawings, textures and solutions. All coming together in harmony.

If you've ever caught yourself imagining how a room could be better, you already have the beginning of a designer's mindset.

The only question left is what you do with it.
Join us and explore what it really takes to turn that instinct into a career.

One vital skill that every Interior Designer needs to master is people management.

How do you handle indecisive clients - a new colour, different flooring, change of kitchen layout...one "small change" can turn into revised budgets, delayed deliveries, and weeks added to the project.

The answer is communication, trust, and clear boundaries.

✔️ Ensure decisions are clearly understood before work begins
✔️ Explain how change affects time, cost, and the overall design
✔️ Set clear revision limits from the beginning
✔️ Listen carefully, and keep clients informed

Remember, clients trust you to lead the project with confidence.

Great Interior Design is built on creativity, psychology, and effective project management.
