🕰️Memory Lane Monday 🕰️

This week marks two years since I had the privilege of taking over the reins of Ernest Speers, one of Letterkenny’s most historic and cherished businesses.

Over the past two years, I have been constantly reminded that a business like this is about far more than a building or the products on its shelves. It is about the people who came before us — the owners, the staff, the customers, and the generations of families who made Ernest Speers such a special part of Main Street and the wider community.

As we celebrate this milestone, I want to express my sincere gratitude to all the past staff who dedicated their time, effort and care to the business over the decades. Their hard work, commitment and service helped build the reputation and trust that Ernest Speers enjoys today. We are proud to continue the tradition they helped create.

There is a quote often attributed to Sir Isaac Newton that feels particularly fitting:

“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

The success and longevity of Ernest Speers have been built on the foundations laid by generations before us. We are simply the latest custodians of a remarkable story that stretches back well over a century.

Thank you to our loyal customers, old and new, for your continued support over these past two years. We look forward to serving the community for many years to come while respecting the heritage and values that have made Ernest Speers a Letterkenny institution.

🕰️Memory Lane Monday 🕰️

We got this flier from Letterkenny Community Heritage Group and had to share it with you all. It’s a lovely heritage trail map of businesses all around Letterkenny. Call in store and grab yours. Well done to all involved 👏

It reads….
Speers shop with the name Ernest Speer on the front.
Step into Speers and step into a bygone era where a pot-bellied stove still heats the premises, a long oak counter complete with the markings of stubbed-out ci******es speaks of countless threaded transactions and roof windows illuminate the past in the present.
Speers Drapery Shop was founded by the Magee Brothers of Ballymena, Co Antrim in 1880. One of these brothers also established the world-renowned Magees Shop in Donegal Town. See if you can spot the Magee name anywhere in the shop.
In 1910 James Benson bought the premises and he ran the shop until 1955, when Ernest Speer took over. Ernest began working in the shop at the age of 14 and met his future wife there, who also began working there as a young girl. When they got married, they lived with the Bensons and raised their family above the shop. Lester, the second son, took over the running of the business in 1982, only retiring in 2024.
Speers Drapery Shop is now being managed by Philip Browne, who, with long standing staff members, continues to maintain this historic building and run it as it always has been. Sometimes change is good; sometimes such as here in Speers keeping things the way they were can be priceless.
