Notice of Impending Doom: π£π
It is with a tear in my eye and a twitching buttock that I hereby announce the End of Days. Or at least the end of the RoadTrooper.com website. It has had a good run, 16 years online no less, and countless miles of motorcycle touring bliss. I know plenty of folk are still using it and downloading the routes but, due to a recent insane increase (price gouging) in hosting fees I gotta pull the plug. It's far too old to get security updates anymore anyway, it's got more holes than a minced fishing net and as up to date as Windows 98. I should have taken it out back and shot it years ago but didn't have the heart to. But the end is truly nigh.
At the end of this month www.RoadTrooper.com will be sadly relegated to the ether, will cease to exist, will expire, evaporate into the realm of history, signed off, facing the impending and irreversible one way off switch and registered as deceased.
It was a hell of a ride, but nothing lasts forever, it'll be a sad day when it reaches its final chapter, for sure it's in all likelihood I'll drink a few single malts in its memory, to all the fine places it led me, and to all the weird and wonderful people I met through running it. Not least of all my wife who I met on one such extended excursion in a land far to the east. Certainly there's hardly an Alpine pass nor Pyrenean valley, nor side road, back road or s**t road between Galway and Kiev that, partly due to a weak bladder, has not been blessed with a personal watering as was my long running on tour tradition of marking my territory. I believe that behavior is now frowned upon and described as toxic masculinity or some other such nonsense π€£
I sit here thinking how much the whole of Europe, east, west, north and south has changed since my first continental adventures in the 90's. First on a Kawasaki VN400, then a VN800A before my 1st proper mile muncher in the form of a R1150RT that allowed me to cover 1000+km a day in both style and comfort. From riding across a frozen lake in Finland to writing off a 750 Africa Twin somewhere in a Spanish dessert, from being overtaken by a tornado just south of Bordeaux, and almost freezing to death in a freak snowstorm in the Basque Pyrenees. Never in all my years did I find any real trouble though, except that one time I got robbed blind by the f**ken gangster police in Ukraine. Even this though taught me a valuable lesson - always carry 2 wallets and never trust anyone in uniform carrying an assault rifle π
Anyway, the RoadTrooper site is still online for a little while longer if you want to make use of it. RIP mi amigo π’
