The awards season is over and, once again, who stands out is Cate Blanchett. The actress, who competed for all the awards for her performance in Tar, knows how to use fashion in her favor, always appearing impeccable on the red carpets.
More than choosing the best dress from the best show, Cate and her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, opted for non-obvious, timeless choices that carry an important message of sustainability.
For the Governors Awards, the actress repeated a McQueen dress that she had worn at the Venice festival in 2020, in the same way she did at the London Critics Awards and at the Berlin Festival, where she repeated McQueen set and Givenchy dress, respectively.
At SAG, it was upcycling's turn. In a custom Giorgio Armani, lace from another dress by the actress, worn at the Golden Globes and Cannes previously, was used.
For the Time Gala, Cate chose the Alexandre Vauthier blazer, used in 2022, with something more, the same necklace she had worn a week earlier, at the Bafta, where she repeated a Margiela dress she had worn at the 2015 Oscars with some changes. At the Green Carpet Fashion Awards, she went even further, wearing a Valentino set, a mix of the brand's deadstock and archival pieces.
Finally, at the Oscars, the actress wore a blouse from the Louis Vuitton archive with a skirt made of sustainable silk, in complete harmony with the trends of fashion for current times, combining existing clothes with clothes made in a conscious way.
It may seem like something normal for us, who repeat our clothes every day, but it is an interesting and important movement when dealing with a big movie star and fashion icon, since they hardly repeat clothes and are responsible for generating desire. Despite the fact that every day it is more common to see celebrities wearing vintage on the red carpets, this search for what to wear in one's wardrobe is still something unusual in this environment, even when it comes to hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of dresses, which are not nor should they be disposable.
The speech produced by Blanchett is very strong and important at a time when fashion discusses sustainability a lot, but makes little of it effective.
