With the aim of creating an alternative to animal leather, Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez, both from Mexico, have developed a vegan alternative to leather made from nopal (a cactus), which they successfully presented in Milan, Italy, in October 2019.
After two years of research and development, the creators were finally able to finalise a marketable cactus-based material as an alternative to leather in July 2019. The brand name is Desserto®️, and it has competitive properties compared to animal or synthetic leather, such as sustainability, performance and aesthetics.
Adrian and Marte came up with the idea after working in the furniture, automotive and fashion industries, where they realised that the problem of pollution was very serious. So they decided to quit their jobs and start Adriano Di Marti, a company focused on developing Desserto®️, now known as vegan cactus or nopal leather. Images: .pelle

Everyone can create. Why then do we covet designer labels? Why simply buy the design of another person, when you can create yourself?

We can all collect, appreciate, and be influenced by the designs of others. But the highest form of self-expression - and I believe the most fun - is to create for ourselves.

Fashion is an art I’ve had the opportunity to play with over the years. I’ve designed clothes and learned about shapes with many of the best tailors.

Designers often sketch or approve designs, but it is the tailors who make the difference and who I truly love creating with. And yet, these makers rarely receive the credit and respect they deserve.

I am building a place for creative people to collaborate with a skilled and diverse family of expert tailors, pattern makers and artisans from around the world. A place to have fun. To create your own designs with freedom. To discover yourself.

We will use only leftover, quality vintage material and deadstock. You will be able to repair or upcycle pieces from your closet you wish to revive, perfecting fit, breathing new life into what could have been thrown away, and creating quality heirloom garments with personal meaning.

We hope to create a community of creativity and inspiration, regardless of socio-economic background. We will spotlight the people who play a part in each creation. We will bring together a diverse team, including apprenticeships for refugees and other talented, underappreciated groups, with positions of dignity based on skill. And as we work with global artisans and creators, we hope to help share the richness of their cultural heritage and support the development of their own businesses.

It’s all new, and I’m more of an artist than a businesswoman. I hope to see you there, and to be one of the many creating with you within our new creative collective.

Bear with me. I hope to grow this with you.

Adidas has finally revealed plans for what it will do with the huge inventory of Yeezy sneakers, the result of the partnership with Kanye West (Ye) estimated at 1.3 billion dollars. The partnership between them was broken in November 2022, after the artist's anti-Semitic speeches.

Bjoern Gulden, CEO of the company, disclosed that the profit from sales will be donated to some institutions that Kanye West would have harmed with his comments.
The brand with the 3 stripes, however, has not yet announced when or how sales will take place.

"What we are trying to do now is sell some of the partnership pieces. Burning the stock would not be the solution", said the Executive in a statement to adidas shareholders. He even admitted in his speech that "As difficult as he [West] is, he is perhaps the most creative mind in our industry.”

The awards season is over and, once again, who stands out is Cate Blanchett. The actress, who competed for all the awards for her performance in Tar, knows how to use fashion in her favor, always appearing impeccable on the red carpets.
More than choosing the best dress from the best show, Cate and her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, opted for non-obvious, timeless choices that carry an important message of sustainability.
For the Governors Awards, the actress repeated a McQueen dress that she had worn at the Venice festival in 2020, in the same way she did at the London Critics Awards and at the Berlin Festival, where she repeated McQueen set and Givenchy dress, respectively.
At SAG, it was upcycling's turn. In a custom Giorgio Armani, lace from another dress by the actress, worn at the Golden Globes and Cannes previously, was used.
For the Time Gala, Cate chose the Alexandre Vauthier blazer, used in 2022, with something more, the same necklace she had worn a week earlier, at the Bafta, where she repeated a Margiela dress she had worn at the 2015 Oscars with some changes. At the Green Carpet Fashion Awards, she went even further, wearing a Valentino set, a mix of the brand's deadstock and archival pieces.
Finally, at the Oscars, the actress wore a blouse from the Louis Vuitton archive with a skirt made of sustainable silk, in complete harmony with the trends of fashion for current times, combining existing clothes with clothes made in a conscious way.
It may seem like something normal for us, who repeat our clothes every day, but it is an interesting and important movement when dealing with a big movie star and fashion icon, since they hardly repeat clothes and are responsible for generating desire. Despite the fact that every day it is more common to see celebrities wearing vintage on the red carpets, this search for what to wear in one's wardrobe is still something unusual in this environment, even when it comes to hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of dresses, which are not nor should they be disposable.
The speech produced by Blanchett is very strong and important at a time when fashion discusses sustainability a lot, but makes little of it effective.

What you are seeing is not artificial intelligence, no! It's reality. A sneaker with two foot holes that can be worn forward or backward. 🤯
The release is from MSCHF studio, well known for unconventional creations. Their are the Big Red Boots, inspired by Astro Boy, which went viral on social media recently.
Called the BWD, the sneaker looks like two shoes mixed into one and is sure to leave a lot of people confused out there.
And you, would you use it?

What was the last item of clothing you bought?

Why did you buy it?
Because you liked the colour?
The style?
Because it aligned with your values?
Because it looked cute on your favourite influencer?
Because it went viral on TikTok?
Because you were bored? Sad? Happy?
Because an advert suggested it?
What influences us to buy the things we buy? If we know the impact our clothing and purchasing decisions have on people and the planet, why do we still buy the high-waisted wide-leg jeans or the chequered tank top that goes viral on TikTok?
Aside from size accessibility and price, our fashion choices are heavily influenced by psychological factors that often go beyond purely practical considerations. Clothing serves as a means of self-expression and can convey important information about our identity, principles and beliefs. Furthermore, it can clarify our social status and give us a sense of belonging to a certain community.
Marketing tactics can also play an important role in influencing our purchasing decisions. Brands use persuasive marketing techniques, such as limited-time offers, influencer recommendations and social proof, to create a sense of urgency and encourage us to make impulsive purchases. In addition, fashion can have a powerful emotional and psychological impact on us. People often turn to fashion to regulate their mood or manage stress. Thus, wearing a new outfit or buying a new accessory can temporarily boost our self-confidence and improve our mood.
Overall, psychological factors such as self-expression, persuasive marketing, mood regulation and more can have a significant impact on what we buy in terms of fashion and how we engage with the fashion industry.
Understanding the psychological factors that influence our buying behaviour is important in the context of sustainable fashion, as it can help brands develop more effective strategies to promote sustainable practices and engaging with consumers.
Though we may want to believe our values determine our purchasing decisions, the truth is…they aren't the only factors at play.
