3D Printed Beads / Part 3: The driving idea behind 3D Printed Beads was to design the hole not as a simple straight passage, but as a three-dimensional path through which the string travels. By using colorful cords as the string, the path of the hole becomes visible and emphasized. In this way, the project highlights the possibilities of the unique possibilities of the technology and turns the path itself into the centerpiece of the jewelry.

3D Printed Beads / Part 2: The idea for 3D Printed Beads was to explore the most modest part of the bead—the hole—and to examine what 3D printing could offer this untouched element that traditional manufacturing technologies could not.

3D Printed Beads / Part 1: 3d Printed Beads is an experimental project that we did a few years back that stems from our 2016 project Elastic Hinge, a set of three 3d-printed glasses commissioned for the Overview exhibition at Design Museum Holon מוזיאון העיצוב חולון. Inspired by the structure of tent rods, the glasses replace the traditional hinge with an elastic cord threaded through internal channels in the frame and temples. Produced using SLA 3d printing, the design highlights the technology’s ability to create complex inner channels, emphasized by colorful cords that reveal the hidden structure.

A bit about Moby and its texture development.

Texture development played a significant role in the design of Moby, and the overall morphology of the object emerged from a dialogue between the form and the texture, with the surface pattern guiding and emphasizing the overall shape. This relationship between form and surface informed not only Moby’s aesthetic but also its spatial presence.

From the start, Moby was conceived as a sculptural object with a commanding presence, intended to stand out in expansive environments such as hotel lobbies, lounges, reception areas, and outdoor terraces. To achieve this, the texture was designed to be legible from a distance, while remaining refined and sophisticated up close.

In addition to its visual impact, the texture was carefully considered from a usability perspective, ensuring it could be easily cleaned.

Finally, the texture also addressed manufacturing considerations. Because Moby is produced using rotational molding (a process less precise than others, such as injection molding), the surface pattern helps camouflage imperfections, ensuring a consistent and high-quality finish.

Moby offers dual functionality: it can be used as a beverage cooler, with the inner cavity filled with ice to maintain cold temperatures for bottles. Alternatively, it can be used as a serving piece, featuring a stainless-steel insert bowl that allows for the elegant presentation of chilled drinks or food, kept cool through ice placed underneath it.
