Effect of core alkali in fabric
What is core alkali?
The textile good are processed under alkaline condition in scouring, bleaching,
mercerizing, dyeing process, so after processing the alkali what we used for processing
will settle inside the core of the fiber on the textile goods and make the textile pH to
alkali, it should be neutralized properly before going to the further process otherwise
it may causes a following problems.
Problems due to core alkali in fabric:
1. It may cause shade change on Dyed Goods.
2. It may causes Phenolic yellowing on White goods.
3. It will affect the performance of finishing in functional finishes like Water/oil repellent
finishes, resin finishes etc.
4.Some of the Finishing agent will not stable on alkaline pH, so if we use the fabric
contain core alkali for finishing it affect the finishing bath stability, it may causes stain on
the fabric during finishing.
5. In alkali pH textile good are more prone to bacteria & fungus growth.
6. If we use the fabric contain core alkali for cationic softener finishing, the cationic
softener have affinity towards the textile substrate only in acidic ph, so we will not get
good performance.
7. If the fabric contains core alkali the fabric will give harsh feel while touching the
fabric.
8. The fabric strength may get affected while we store the fabric in alkali pH.
Remedies:
So to avoid the above problems we should neutralize the core alkali using alkali
neutralizers before going to the further process.
