FROM THE STUDIO // HAND-SCREEN PRINT

In India, hand-screen printing has been practiced for decades across textile-producing regions including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi and Maharashtra. A stencil-based technique, it builds a design through separate layers of colour, each printed by hand through a fine mesh screen.

What makes it a craft is the human element. Each screen is positioned and aligned by hand, ensuring every layer meets the next to form a complete, precise design. The artisan works with pressure, pigment and placement, adjusting each layer with skill and experience.

Because every layer is applied by hand, subtle variations in colour, edges and placement can occur — natural characteristics that reflect the hand behind the print.

Hand-block printing and hand-screen printing are different crafts, but both are made by hand by skilled artisans. The choice depends on the design, fabric and expression we want to create.

FROM THE STUDIO // HAND-BLOCK PRINTING

Bagru, Rajasthan has been home to the centuries-old tradition of hand-block printing, preserved and practised by the Chhipa community for generations. Once settled along the banks of the Sanjharia River, whose waters were once integral to the printing process, the community continues to carry this enduring craft forward.

Over time, the craft has embraced new explorations and evolving design expressions while remaining deeply rooted in its time-honoured techniques and traditions.

Today, we work alongside this legacy. It keeps us connected to our roots, grounded in our values, and committed to a slower, more intentional way of making.
