As block printers we’ve historically had very close partnerships with handloom and weaving communities.
On National Handloom Day, we’re celebrating that union with a handwoven saree from Yaana, A Weaving House, whose award-winning weavers we’ve been fortunate to collaborate with. This handspun handloom cotton saree is naturally dyed with indigo and Areca, and block printed here at Tharangnini with धी | Dhi Earth

It’s been a whirlwind of a week for us here in Darwin as we take home the Community Collaboration award along with Babbarra Designs at the National Indigenous Fashion Awards (NIFA) — recognising powerful two-way partnerships between First Nations communities, global artisan studios and the fashion industry.

This collection owes so much to our incredible master artisans, especially Satish and Banu, whose talents brought it to life.
We’re so proud of this collaboration and everything it has brought us, and ever grateful to get to create with Babbarra Designs.

We began our Tharangini residency program last year, and it’s already brought us such lovely talented people from across the world whom we are lucky to now call friends.
Natural dye artist Joanna Fowles spent weeks with us working closely with our resident dye expert Banu, developing and testing new natural dye recipes, and producing some of the beautifully composed pieces you see here. It was a treat for all of us to watch these experiments unfold and observe new ways of making, especially for our colour team. We got to watch new colours emerge that we hadn’t imagined possible with ingredients we thought we knew so well- baby pinks, soft bright yellows and more.
We learnt so much from Joanna’s thoughtful approach to natural colour, and we know this won’t be the last we see of her!

If you’ve been to Tharangini, you know we take our coffee very seriously. And by serious we mean seriously good, freshly brewed filter coffee. We buy a special blend from the same little shop where Padmini’s grandmother bought her coffee powder.

This coffee plant block has been with us right from the beginning, carved from a design hand-painted in 1978 by Padmini ‘s mother Lakshmi. She had a garden full of coffee bushes that continue to thrive today. We stumbled upon her drawing tucked away in some old files.

We find ourselves drawn to this seemingly unassuming block so often- it’s such a timeless elegant botanical design. Coffee remains an emotion for us always!

Chandramma makes our fresh frothy filter coffee everyday, best enjoyed in the garden.
Oh and we also get a little work done in between all the coffee breaks, promise!
