Parsi Gara is one of India's most exquisite embroidery traditions, and one of its most guarded.

Brought to life by Parsi women who transformed silk into art through delicate hand needlework, each motif tells a story. Cranes for longevity. Vines that wind across the fabric like they've grown there. Florals worked stitch by stitch, never printed, never machine-made.

This craft survives today because artisans still embroider it exactly as it was two centuries ago, slowly, by hand, with a patience most crafts have lost.

White is the hardest colour in chikankari. There's no print to lean on, no colour block to hide an uneven stitch. Every knot has to be placed with precision because the fabric shows everything.

This saree is pure georgette, 60 grams, light enough to drape without effort. The chikankari is worked entirely in ivory thread across the body, so the embroidery reads as texture rather than pattern from a distance. Pearl and gota patti are added through the pallu in heavily embroidered panels, building shine only where it's meant to catch light.

French knots are quietly disappearing from Gara work. Each knot is tied by hand, one at a time, the thread wound and pulled just so a single karigar can spend an entire day on a few inches. Most workshops have stopped teaching it. Too slow, too demanding on the eyes.
