Of Indian Origin is a collective of artisan-based cottage industries, providing a platform that promotes hand-crafted products made in India to a global audience. It is an effort to reclaim our extraordinary heritage not just in its traditional form but to re-invent it in unique products and sustainable designs that compliment contemporary lifestyle. It is also an ongoing effort to create a market

for these products by educating the audience about the history of these crafts and the need to patronize not just the crafts but the artisan communities that struggle to keep them alive. Our online store showcases a mindfully curated or co-created product line that articulates cultural identity. Shop from over 1000 hand-crafted treasures at www.ofindianorigin.com - Vintage bags, hand-woven sarees and dupattas in natural fabrics, indo-western apparel, hand-made collectibles, antiques, masks, wooden serve ware, block-printed home furnishings, folk paintings, rare nomadic, tribal, and ethnic jewellery, and lots more - each with a story to tell, a story that is waiting to be woven into your life tapestry. It is a social enterprise that provides resources to artisan communities for product development and promotion. We provide free product training and design interventions to artisan clusters and groups. We provide free photography, graphic designing, and cataloguing services for our artisan friends. We work with several organisations, who engage people with disabilities, or work with underprivileged women, to produce craft that secures a source of livelihood for them. We believe in promoting organic, eco-friendly products, and encourage sustainable fashion. We have always been committed to paying the artisans a fair price and ensure that upto 70% of what we earn goes back to the artisans. "I am a creature of books, you are a creature of books. Books reveal who we are."

Alaknanda Bagchi is the daughter of the eminent writer Annapurna Goswami and the granddaughter of Padma Bhushan Nitish Chandra Laharry, inheriting a rich literary legacy that has profoundly influenced her sensibility. Growing up in an environment steeped in literature and history, she developed an early fascination with language, thought, and storytelling.

Alaknanda is an alumnus of Presidency College, and a writer for whom words have always been a way of life. There has not been a single day in the last 75 years when she has not written, even if only a few lines. Writing, for her, is both a habit and a calling, a quiet discipline that shapes her everyday existence. A keen observer of life, Alaknanda is constantly exploring human nature, culture, and emotion, themes that are at the heart of her stories. The people she meets and the characters she encounters in everyday life often find their way, transformed and reimagined, into her stories.

Alaknanda Bagchi’s Bengali book, “Sakhhakar Oonnanyo Galpo”, has been warmly appreciated by readers for its depth, sensitivity, and storytelling. Building on this literary journey, she was inspired to write this book in English with the hope that it will reach and resonate with the next generation of readers, encouraging them to engage with literature that is thoughtful, reflective, and deeply human.

Thank you so much Ms. Bandana Mukhopadhyay for this beautiful impression.

A student of physics and anthropology, Bandana completed her master's from the University of Delhi before she joined All India Radio, where she rose to the position of Chief Producer. She's also worked with the United Nations Development Programme where she played a pioneering role in introducing community radio within academic institutions. With Commonwealth Education Media Centre for Asia and Indira Gandhi National Open University, she helped develop skill-based programs that integrated community radio with distance learning.

Translating her words and paraphrasing for my non-Bengali friends.
“What I really liked was the simplicity in the writing. The simple language that has been used to tell the stories. Another interesting thing that I noted was that the author has lived a long life spanning 85 years, which was not without its trials and tribulations, starting from loosing her mother at a young age, but there is no trace of bitterness anywhere in the writing. There is a wonderous sense of joy that permeates all of her writing. Not all of them are sweet romantic stories, in fact, none of them are. However, that strain of joy is there in each and every one of her stories. Another fun element I found was that sometimes the author is the observer and sometimes she cannot help but get involved with the characters and their lives. And the ebb and flow of this empathetic narrative finally brings us to the end of the book. I kept thinking that Malini, Neha, Nandita, Charai… all of these women seem familiar somehow. They are people that I know. They are women amongst us. And the author is able to bring us to this point of recognition. Just as all of us get together in this café and have conversations, the characters too emerge naturally from amongst us from this very space. This element is quite unique. Like I mentioned, I feel the reflection of Ashapurna Devi’s sensibilities in these stories. It was a pleasure reading this book in English. I do not recall having read such simple and joyful writing in English in recent times. So, congratulations once again…” – Bandana Mukhopadhyay
