n fortunate enough to preserve and promote this fabric ‘art’. Kosa silk is a type of silk obtained from an Indian silkworm – Antheraea mylitta. It is drawn out of cocoons that are grown on specific trees like Arjun, Saja and Sal. The origin of this hand woven and hand printed fabric can be traced to the tribes having their lineage to the 14th century weaver-saint –poet Kabir. The hand printing is generally done with natural vegetable dye extracted from aal , found in the forest of Chattisgarh. Kosa Silk adapts itself quite wonderfully to printing and painting. In fact it is the weavers’ imagination that brings out the best prints on Kosa silk fabric. Each of the ‘fera’ and ‘jaala’ weave in Kosa silk fabrics have a unique story to tell which draw images from nature to historical and mythological stories. Cities like Bilaspur, Raigarh and Champa in Chhattisgarh are known for kosa silk. The Dewangan community plays a pivotal role in kosa printing and production, hence our name ‘Chattisgarh Emporium’. We also promote the Tribal and Warli art through our designs on Saris, Dress materials and Dupattas. As an economic activity, handlooms comprise the largest cottage industry in the country. Millions of looms across the country are engaged in weaving cotton, silk and other natural fibers to bring out traditional beauty of India’s precious heritage and also providing livelihood to millions of families. There is hardly a village where weavers do not exist weaving out the traditional beauty of the region. The skills and activities are kept alive by passing the skills from generation to generation.
