From learning about textiles to speaking about them.

Some moments in a journey feel particularly special.

On the occasion of National Handloom Day, I had the privilege of interacting with the students of Bangalore University and speaking to them about Indian handlooms — their history, craftsmanship, technical intricacies, sustainability, and most importantly, the people and generations of knowledge behind them.

What made this interaction meaningful was the opportunity to introduce young minds to handloom not merely as something we wear, but as a living tradition that brings together art, skill, science, culture and livelihoods.

I spoke about the importance of understanding what we wear, recognising authentic craftsmanship, and appreciating the time and skill that goes into creating a handwoven textile.

For someone who has spent years learning about and working closely with handlooms, being able to share that knowledge with students was both an honour and a responsibility.

Because preserving our handloom heritage begins with awareness, appreciation and understanding.

Grateful to Bangalore University, Department of Apparel Technology and Management, for the opportunity and for such an engaging interaction with the students.
