Handloom Saree Processing Steps
Selection of Raw Material
Cotton, silk, wool, or other natural fibers are selected based on the type of saree.
Yarn Preparation
Fibers are spun into yarn.
The yarn is cleaned and wound onto bobbins or cones.
Dyeing
The yarn is dyed in the desired colors using natural or synthetic dyes.
After dyeing, it is washed and dried.
Warping
The lengthwise yarns (warp) are arranged in the required order and length.
This determines the design and size of the saree.
Sizing
A starch solution (often made from rice or other natural starches) is applied to the warp yarn.
This strengthens the yarn and reduces breakage during weaving.
Loom Preparation
The warp is mounted on the handloom.
The heddles and reed are set according to the weave pattern.
Weaving
The weaver interlaces the warp and weft yarns manually using the handloom.
Borders, pallu, and motifs are woven as per the design.
Depending on the complexity, one saree can take anywhere from 2 days to several weeks to complete.
Finishing
The woven saree is checked for defects.
Loose threads are trimmed.
The saree is washed, dried, and ironed or calendared for a smooth finish.
Quality Inspection
The saree is inspected for weaving quality, color consistency, dimensions, and finishing.
Folding and Packaging
The finished saree is neatly folded, tagged, and packed for sale.
