Microspin Machine Works

Microspin Machine Works Microspin is a start-up company born out of the vision to radically transform the textile industry.

Integration of the value-chain has been recognized by experts as the route to profitability. But with an over-sized spinning mill, it is just not practical to integrate! The small spinning units of Microspin integrate naturally with the existing scales of production in the dyeing, sizing, warping and weaving segments of the value-chain – making for an efficient and lean production chain that is re

ady to target segmented high-value markets globally. An important focus area of Microspin is to up-skill participants in our value-chain — typically, young men and women with no specific background in this domain. The Learning Management System (LMS) is a tool to identify specific skills under each job-role and build content to impart these skills in the shortest possible time-frame. This tool will also provide a graded career-path for participants to progressively acquire more sophisticated skills and upgrade themselves. By providing a platform for capturing and sharing best practices, the LMS will drive the whole eco-system to differentiate itself on quality, rather than be trapped into becoming the lowest-cost provider of low-end offerings.

It is all happening here, in a small Indian village. A pathbreaking Disruption. In the heart of central India’s cotton growing district, infamous for its farmer suicides, yes, Vidarbha.

A young engineer-innovator has joined hands with another young visionary cooperative leader. Together they are, truly, Making in India.

With women farmers, youth. Disrupting a 200 years old colonial yarn-making technology, the basis of the now old, energy guzzling Industrial Revolution. Creating a new pipeline of people and processes. A possibility for famers to become manufacturing entrepreneurs.

Welcome to The World’s Smallest Integrated Textile Mill in Buldana, India. Luring back the yarn from the archaic colonial technology, from the polluting, dirty urban Industrial hubs. Back to the villages, the farms. Where that fluffy white cotton is actually birthed. And to the people, the farmers who mother it.

Crafted Yarn™, straight from .

Founder & CTO of Vortex Engineering Pvt. Ltd, Kannan Lakshminarayan in an interview to Govindraj Ethiraj says,

"It's not that we went out trying to compete with the Multinationals, we were trying to address the problems of financial inclusions, context to where 80% of the people in rural India are not having a bank account and when we looked at what is it that we can do to bring them within the fold because they obviously need so many financial services, it appeared that you need a solution that makes it profitable for the bank to deliver those services, and when we looked at the different challenges that a bank would typically face, we recognised that an ATM machine is the way to go but a conventional ATM will not suit such a context for a number of technical reasons so we drew a wish list of what should an ATM for these people be like and then went about building it"

L. Kannan, an IIT-Madras graduate, the man responsible for the actual technology that has made Malkha’s small-scale, energy-saving approach possible, started off figuring why such a profitable sector was leaving its workers so destitute. “Most of the people are living at very abject levels, but it’s not as if the industry is obsolete,” he says. Starting in 2000, Kannan began to actually build a prototype of the machine that today transforms fresh, loose cotton into strands of soft twisted threads at a scale 100 times smaller than conventional spinning mills, allowing Uzramma’s vision to materialize: they’ve established factories with suites of three machines that keep the vertical chain intact and under the autonomy of the community. In terms of eco-sustainability, all of this requires only 5 HP (horsepower).

Handspun in decentralised village units, powered by an indigenous card machine, and travelling fashion ramps the world over, Malkha, the "freedom fabric" shows how we could go from mill to hand fashionably.

Industry experts recognize that integration is the way to profitable textile production. But the scale of conventional spinning makes this expensive and impractical. Micro-spinning enables integration on a small scale, without the inefficiencies of scale.
