There was a time when festivals meant waking up to the fragrance of agarbathi and fresh jasmine, the soft hum of morning prayers, and the sight of our mothers draping their silks with effortless grace.

As little girls, we tried to be just like them. Copying the way they drew kolams at the doorstep, carefully arranging flowers into garlands, and sneaking into their almirahs to try on sarees much too big for us.

The mirror would laugh back at our clumsy pleats and oversized blouses, but in our hearts, we felt grown. Those moments - of watching, imitating, learning - became our first lessons in tradition.
