And all of a sudden we were found ourselves at our final group dinner! We shared delicious food, wonderful company, great memories and much gratitude for all that we’d learned, seen and experienced in the last two weeks.

Huge thanks to this wonderful group of textile adventurers, our exceptional, caring tour leader Tony, our fabulous drivers and local guides, the many villages and people who’ve welcomed and hosted us so generously and shared their textile and cultural traditions with us.

The islands of East Nusa Tenggara are nothing short of amazing!

INDONESIA TEXTILES AND HANDCRAFTS TOUR

We were privileged to visit a well respected indigo dyer. Indigo dye can be made from fresh leaves (indigofera tinctoria) or preserved as a paste which is reactivated with water strained through wood ash.

We dyed skeins of cotton yarn with indigo (blue), mud (black/grey) and morinda root bark (red-brown).

We spent time at several markets where local textiles are sold. While this was , truth be told, everyone in our group purchased multiple-many seriously beautiful textile pieces as we travelled.

It is usually the pieces purchased directly from the maker that are most meaningful, and when a particular textile ‘calls’ your name, there’s just no ignoring it!

But sometimes there are surprisingly wonderful treasures to be found amongst the volume of market stock.. you just never know! So of course we had to stop and check out every stall throughly.

INDONESIA TEXTILES AND HANDCRAFTS TOUR

Traditional villages in Sumba have steep thatched roof houses, megalithic tombs of ancestors, alters for sacrifices, and buffalo skulls displayed outside the entrance of each home (more buffalo skulls indicates more wealth).

Women often set up their looms in the shade of the verandah or under the house.

At Praijing village, we saw women finishing off their weaving by using the warp threads to create a supplementary weft border. Their fingers moved so quickly!

INDONESIA TEXTILES AND HANDCRAFTS TOUR

Pahikung (supplementary weft weaving) is practiced in Sumba and woven on a backstrap loom. The pattern template (dangga) is made of wood or split bamboo. These sticks pick out the supplementary warp threads to create the raised, highly detailed motifs before weaving.

Pahikung is technically demanding to weave and is sometimes combined with warp ikat panels - which means the weavers are clever beyond (my) comprehension.
