Why is a shirt armhole half an inch less than a quarter of the chest? 🤔

A coat has shoulder pads, but a shirt has no padding. So the shirt armhole is cut a little smaller than a coat’s, which keeps the fit clean.

The shirt front: then vs now

Shirts used to be made with a placket, and we would allow 2 inches for it.

Today’s shirts are made differently:
- The front is folded three times
- No stitching
- No fusing

The biggest advantage of skipping the fusing: if fusing doesn’t bond properly, it leaves bubbles on the shirt front. This method avoids that problem entirely.

You need a 4.5-inch margin at the front. Mark it at 4.5 inches in a perfectly straight line.

How many ways can a shirt hem be cut?

There are three:
1️⃣ Square Cut: a straight, flat hem, made to be worn untucked.
2️⃣ American Cut: a rounded, curved hem, made to be tucked in.
3️⃣ Short C**t: a small side vent that gives a more relaxed look and easier movement.

One rule that never changes: always leave 1 inch extra at the length mark. That small allowance keeps the final fit right. 📏

The hem decides whether a shirt is tucked or worn out, so the style has to be settled before the fabric is cut.

Why start learning with a 36-chest shirt?

Because it’s the simplest method the masters passed down:
📏 Chest 36
📏 Waist 32
📏 Shoulder 17.5
📏 Sleeve 23.5
📏 Collar 14.5

Cutting is taught on these standard measurements around the world. When we teach a pleatless trouser, we use the 36 size hip as the base too.

Once your hand is set on the base size, every other size starts making sense. That’s the foundation of every good cutter.

What actually goes into a bespoke trouser?

A ready-made pair is built from a standard size. A bespoke trouser starts with your body, and every step is decided with intent:

The cut: The fork is placed from your own hip proportions, not a fixed number. That’s why the trouser doesn’t pull when you sit, walk, or bend.

The master’s marks: At the cutting table, the master chalks every piece with darts, pockets, pleats, and the waistband. The karigar reads those marks and stitches exactly the design you chose at your fitting.

The inside: A viscose half-lining keeps you from feeling too hot or too cold. On a one-piece pant, the waistband is cut as one with the trouser instead of being added separately, and the santa is finished on the inside.

None of this is visible at first glance. You feel it every time you wear them.

When the master cuts the cloth, he chalks marks onto every piece.

Each mark is an instruction for the karigar
• The dart mark at the back
• The pocket mark, with “2” written beside it for two back pockets
• A cut belt, which gets two buttons
• A mark that tells him this is a one-piece pant
• The pleat marks
• The mark showing where the cross pocket goes

The karigar reads all of it without asking a single question. It’s the workshop’s own language, passed down through generations.

In tailoring and sewing, “gidri” (गिदरी) refers to the fork or crotch curve of trousers.

Where is a trouser’s comfort decided? At the fork. 👖

Many tailors place the fork with a fixed number: 3”, 3¼”, or 3½”. But every body is different, so how can one number fit everyone?

In English cutting, the fork mark comes from the hip: half the hip measurement. For a 40” hip, we set it at 20”. The point is calculated from your proportions, not guessed. We follow the same rule when cutting a one-piece trouser. It is never measured from the top.

That’s why the trouser doesn’t pull when you sit, walk, or bend. The comfort is cut to your body.
