पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार, मां ब्रह्मचारिणी का जन्म पार्वती के रूप में पर्वतराज के घर में पुत्री के रूप में हुआ था। भगवान शिव से शादी के लिए नारद जी ने मां पार्वती को व्रत रखने की सलाह दी थी। भगवान शिव को पाने के लिए देवी मां ने निर्जला, निराहार होकर कठोर तपस्या की थी। हजारों साल तपस्या करने के बाद ही मां पार्वती को तपश्चारिणी या ब्रह्मचारिणी नाम से जाना जाता है।

नवरात्रि के प्रथम दिन आश्विन शुक्ल प्रतिपदा को घटस्थापना के साथ ही दुर्गा के प्रथम स्वरूप मां शैलपुत्री की उपासना की जाती है। मां दुर्गा अपने पहले स्वरूप में शैलपुत्री के नाम से पूजी जाती हैं। पर्वतराज हिमालय की पुत्री होने के कारण इनका नाम शैलपुत्री पड़ा।
