In December 2024, ⚽🇸🇦Saudi Arabia was officially confirmed as the host of the 2034 FIFA World Cup. (It was the only bidder.)
It's plans include building multiple new stadiums, including one in NEOM [Neo (Greek for “new”) and M (from Mostaqbal, the Arabic word for “future”). Alternatively it's considered an acronym for New Enterprise Opportunity Megacity]
This is proposed to be elevated over 350 meters above ground.
🏗️Construction is planned to commence in 2027
🏟️The futuristic NEOM Stadium will be among 15 venues across five cities, marking the second World Cup in the Middle East after Qatar 2022.
♻️Renewable Energy : The NEOM Stadium, located within The Line megacity, is proposed to operate entirely on renewable energy generated primarily from 🍃wind and ☀️solar sources , as per the Bid document.
✡️Modular Seating Geometry: The conceptual renderings appear to depict the seating bowl divided into modular polyhedral (hexagon-like) clusters rather than continuous oval tiers. This is an interpretation of the released renderings at the concept stage.
💺Seating : The estimated proposed seating capacity is said to be more than 45000. (As per bid document, Net capacity = 40,685 , while Gross capacity = 46,010)
🟩Field of Play : As with all other proposed stadiums, the stadium will incorporate a hybrid-reinforced grass pitch. (a natural grass turf system woven/reinforced with synthetic fibers)
🚇Transportation : These systems will be entirely electric (as per the Bid) , with the five-minute walkability/accessibility urban model, promoting travel on foot.
After the Games : Future primary legacy use is planned as a Home to a professional football club (both men and women)
Interestingly, unlike other 2034 World Cup venues where the lead design firms were publicly disclosed (e.g., Populous for the King Salman International Stadium and Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium; Arup for New Murabba Stadium), Saudi planning authorities and the NEOM Company have not formally credited a primary architectural firm for the NEOM Stadium design. The released design materials remain attributed collectively to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation / NEOM Company.
⚠️One must also note that as per the Bid Evaluation Report, " The proposed design of the stadium and its integration into its surroundings are currently conceptual and careful further analysis would be required to collectively assess their suitability for FIFA World Cup operations."
🙏🏼Having designed stadiums meeting international standards of upto 5000 capacity, we certainly have some idea of the challenges involved.
Wishing their entire leadership and team all the very best and looking forward to the quarter-finals 👍🏼
