पगड़ी का इस्तेमाल हमारे देश में सदियों से होता आया है | प्राचीन काल से ही हमारे यहाँ पगड़ी को व्यक्तित्व,आन,बान,शान और हैसियत का प्रतीक माना जाता रहा है | पगड़ी हमारे देश में चाहे हिन्दू शासक रहें हों या मुस्लिम शासक सभी की प्रिय रही है | आज भी पगड़ी को इज्जत का परिचायक समझा जाता है | पगड़ी को किसी के आगे रख देना सर झुकाना व उसकी अधीनता समझना माना जाता है | महाराणा प्रताप ने वर्षों में जंगल में रहना पसंद किया पर अकबर के आगे अपनी पगड़ी न झुका कर मेवाड़ी पाग (पगड़ी )की हमेशा लाज रखी |
राजस्थान में हर वर्ग व जाति समुदाय अपनी अपनी शैली में सिर पर पगड़ी बांधते है ,राजपूत समुदाय में इसी पगड़ी को साफा कह कर पुकारा जाता है ,राजपूत समाज में साफों के अलग-अलग रंगों व बाँधने की अलग-अलग शैली का इस्तेमाल समय समय के अनुसार होता है जैसे - युद्ध के समय राजपूत सैनिक केसरिया साफा पहनते थे अत: केसरिया रंग का साफा युद्ध और शौर्य का प्रतीक बना | आम दिनों में राजपूत बुजुर्ग खाकी रंग का गोल साफा सिर पर बांधते थे तो विभिन्न समारोहों में पचरंगा,चुन्दडी,लहरिया आदि रंग बिरंगे साफों का उपयोग होता था | सफ़ेद रंग का साफा शोक का पर्याय माना जाता है इसलिए राजपूत समाज में सिर्फ शोकग्रस्त व्यक्ति ही सफ़ेद साफा पहनता है |
लेकिन पिछले कुछ सालों में आधुनिकता की दौड़ में राजस्थान की युवा पीढ़ी अपनी इस परम्परा से विमुख होती गयी और वो साफा बंधना भी भूल गयी पर धीरे धीरे वर्तमान पीढ़ी को अपनी गलती महसूस हुई पर जब तक बहुत देर हो चुकी थी गांवों में तो फिर कुछ लोग थे जिन्हें परम्परागत साफा बांधना आता था पर शहरों में तो शादी ब्याह के अवसर पर भी साफा बाँधने वालों को तलाश करना पड़ता था | इसी कमी को पूरा करने के लिए शहरों में साफा बाँधने वालों की मांग ने इसे व्यवसायिक बना दिया और इस व्यवसाय को सही दिशा दी जोधपुर साफा हॉउस ने |

Turban - The Crown of Rajasthan:

The turbans of Rajasthan are the most colourful and impressive in whole of the India. The use of turbans was basically started by the Rajput community, who reside in the Indian state of Rajasthan. They used to wear distinct turbans and the Hindi pronouncation of turban is Paag, Safa or Pagri. Once you experience the royal culture of Rajasthan, you will be amazed with the variations of colourful turbans.
It is said that the style of the turban changes with every 15 km you travel within the geographical boundaries of Rajasthan. In some parts of the region, the size of turban indicates the position of the person in the society they live.

Relevance Behind Each Coloured Turban:
Turbans add brilliant splash of colour and style to monotonous and barren lands. Each colour has its own importance and significance like Ochre is the colour of the mendicant, while the saffron is commonly worn at the time of weddings. In the medieval past, the colour saffron also denoted valour and chivalry. When besieged by an enemy, and food and water supplies were scanty, desperate warriors wearing saffron turbans would sneak out of their citadels to lead sudden surprise attacks on the enemy.

Turbans of specified colours are worn to mark periods of mourning. A white turban is worn for funeral processions by immediate family members. Whereas the khaki, blue and dark maroon are reserved for the solemnity of a condolence visit. Whereas in Rajasthan each caste have their own distinguishing colours, by which they are recognised, like shepherds wear red turbans, Bishnois, who are known as the most nomadic shepherd tribes and environmental conservationists, always wear white turbans and the other tribal communities wear printed turbans.
Thus, the painted area is then wrapped with the tissue, plastic, or medical tape to lock in the body heat, so that it can create more intense colour on the skin. The wrap is worn overnight and then removed in the next morning. Which when washed, leaves a rich reddish brown colour on the surface of skin and can last somewhere from one to three weeks, depending on the quality of the paste.

Seasonal Turbans:
Some turban colours are seasonal to wear like in between February and March, flowers bloom and crops are harvested, it makes the best time for tourists to see the royal Rajasthani men, wearing a falgunia turban having white and red designs. Whereas in the month of July, the predominant colour is motiya or pearl pink. A green and pink striped or yellow and red striped lahariya turban, where the colours are tie dyed in waves, are worn during the time of monsoon. Whereas the Pancharanga is the distinguishing turban in the
colourful soil of Rajasthan.
