Why does some rubber turn white, hard and cracked in the sun — while some stays black and flexible for years? ☀️

The difference often comes down to material selection and compound formulation.

In outdoor applications like drip irrigation grommets, rubber seals and pipe fittings, low UV-resistant rubber can fade, harden and crack much faster under sunlight and weather exposure.

EPDM rubber performs much better in outdoor conditions because it offers strong weather, UV and ozone resistance. In black EPDM compounds, carbon black is commonly added to improve outdoor durability.

So what does carbon black actually do?

Carbon black helps protect rubber by absorbing UV radiation and reducing the amount of sunlight that penetrates and damages the rubber surface. In simple words, it acts like a shield or sunscreen for the rubber compound, helping reduce premature fading, chalking, hardening and cracking.
