We are hearing that this pattern is being referred to as the Pintucks pattern. That wasn’t intentional, cause we initially made it for our flower girls and it had caught some attention last month on the gram, but we totally get why. It’s delicate, comfortable and catches the light in all the right ways. Come to think of it, it IS so Pintucks!

A scalloped hem is one of those details that doesn’t announce itself loudly, but changes everything once you notice it.

Soft curves instead of hard edges. A finish that feels considered, almost patient like the garment decided it didn’t want to end abruptly.

When I was growing up, hand smocking was everywhere. So much so that if you open our family photo albums, there’s a very high chance you’ll find me wearing a hand smocked dress made by Amama in most of them.

But like the trends things have changed, somewhere along the way, the craft became quieter. Machine work began replicating the look faster, easier, cheaper, and naturally, we don’t receive as many hand smocking orders in the studio anymore.

I could talk about preserving handmade craft, about slowing down enough to appreciate work that takes time and patience. And I do believe all of that.

But truthfully?
These dresses was my personal favourite for a far less poetic reason.

In most Mallu households, “smocking” was always pronounced as “smoking.” And as a child, I genuinely thought wearing a “smoking dress” made me the coolest person alive 🙇🏻‍♀️
