My father unknowingly instilled in me the love for cotton. Even in the 90s, when the sustainable fashion movement had not yet spread it's wing in Calcutta , I always saw baba wearing cotton clothes. He said it allowed his skin to breathe. His approach to fashion went beyond fleeting trends and fads; It was about the deep connection between clothing and well being. He had a simple yet effective way of checking fabric- scrunching it in his hand and relying on the creases to determine if it was pure cotton.
In today’s world where we meticulously curate our lives and pay attention to every detail, it's time we extend that thoughtfulness to our wardrobes. Over the past decade or so, people have become increasingly conscious of their clothing choices, focusing on more than just the outward appearance. People have started to see fashion as more than just a means of self expression. It has become a way to connect with the stories behind the garments, to honour craftsmanship and acknowledge their skill and leaving lighter footprint on the planet.
It’s inspiring to see individuals taking time to research brands that prioritise ethical sourcing, sustainable practices and fair trade. This shift has led to environmentally friendly and socially conscious choices .It’s a joy to see the community of conscious consumers and the producers grow with a plethora of brands offering natural fibres, up cycled clothes, thrift stores and vintage boutiques- its a fashion playground of possibilities.
Although I can’t verify the authenticity of baba’s way of fabric checking method, it taught me the importance of quality and a fashion philosophy that goes beyond mere appearances. It’s about embracing the stories, traditions and values behind what we wear and our impact on the planet. Because it’s cool to care what you wear.
. It will be great to know what you think.
