Exquisite Double Pallu Berhampuri Pure Silk Saree

The Berhampuri patta was introduced in the 14th century by the Mohuri Kings in the district of Ganjam, Odisha.

It is believed that the Mohuri King invited skilled weavers, known as Debangas, from Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh to settle in his kingdom and practice their craft.

The saree is linked to a devotional practice, as the Mohuri King initially used the textile for worshiping the goddess “Mohuri Kahlua”.

The saree is known for its “Phoda Kumbha” (temple motif) designs, which are a hallmark of its Odissi style of weaving.

The Berhampuri saree was granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2013, recognizing its unique craftsmanship and cultural importance.

SAMBALPURI PHODA KUMBHA Saree
(Pure mulberry Silk)

The word Phoda translates to “piercing” or “breaking”, while Kumbha refers to a water pot or the crown temple spire (shikhar). Unlike standard embroidered borders, two weavers must work simultaneously from opposite sides of the loom. They manually lift and interlock distinct colored threads at the border boundary to achieve razor-sharp, distinct geometric edges.

The main attraction of this saree is its double blouse piece.
Blouse piece number 1: contrast with the saree
Blouse piece number 2: running one
