The earliest recorded history of baluchari sarees goes back over 200 years to the 18th century Nawab of Bengal, Murshidkuli Khan, who brought this art from Dhaka (in present day Bangladesh) to a small village named Baluchar on the banks of the river Bhagirathi in Murshidabad (in West Bengal). Baluchari derives its name from ‘balu’ (meaning sand) and ‘char’ (or river bank).
The art was patronized in Baluchar, until the continually changing courses of the Bhagirathi river meant that villagers had to keep uprooting themselves and move along with the river. Eventually, a flooding of the Bhagirathi forced the trade to shift from Murshidabad to Bishnupur (in the Bankura district of West Bengal) in the nineteenth century. The trade then flourished for a while under the Malla dynasty there, until the British felt threatened by their inability to replicate this artisanship in the mills of England and forced financial sanctions that squeezed the poor weavers out of their craft and brought it to the verge of shutting down.

Drawing from the flora and fauna of the natural world, as well as the rich tapestry of symbols adorning Kanchipuram’s numerous temples, the kanjivaram’s motifs are rooted in local contexts and artistic traditions. The land of a thousand temples, as it has come to be known, has contributed the unique temple motif– taking the form of rows of large triangles woven into the ground fabric, in the inter-locked weft technique known as korvai which is unique to kanjivaram saris.

The name Eri is derived from the Assamese word ‘era’, which means castor as the silkworm feeds on castor plants. Eri silk is also known as Endi or Errandi in India. Eri is known as the eco-friendliest amongst silk.
It is the only domesticated silk produced in India, as the process doesn’t involve any killing of the silk worm, also naming Eri silk as ‘Ahimsa’ (Ahinsa) silk or fabric of peace.

Eri Silk is called the father of all forms of cultured and textured Silks. Moths leave the cocoon and then the open-mouthed cocoons are harvested to be spun.
