Not all “sustainable” labels mean the same thing. Here’s how to read between the lines:

1. Check what’s actually certified
“GOTS-certified cotton” and “made in a GOTS-certified facility” are not the same. Both are valid, but they mean different levels of control. If a brand is clear about this, it’s a good sign.

2. Look beyond the fabric name
“organic cotton”, “natural”, “bamboo” - these sound good, but without certification or processing details, they don’t tell you much. The proof is in how it’s made, not what it’s called.

3. See if they talk about dyes
Most brands don’t. Azo-free and water-based dyes matter because they sit on your child’s skin all day. If this isn’t mentioned anywhere, it’s worth questioning.

4. Don’t be distracted by packaging.
Compostable mailers are great, but they’re also the easiest box to tick. Fabric and chemical safety matter far more than how it’s shipped.

5. Watch for specifics, not adjectives
“Ethically made” and “responsibly sourced” sound nice, but real brands explain where and how. The more specific they are, the more likely it’s real.

The goal isn’t to find a perfect brand.
It’s to understand what’s actually being claimed.
