Folklore suggests that Rao Kishore Singh, a general in the Mughal army, patronised the Kota Doria weavers. It is believed that they moved from Mysore to Kota in the late 17th and early 18th century. Hence the artform also came to be known as Kota-Masuria.
The age-old weave was once used as headgear for royalties. With the passage of time, the saris gained prominence and began to be viewed as an auspicious attire during festivities
Handwoven on traditional pit looms in Kaithoon near Kota and some of its surrounding villages, the drapes are renowned for their lightness and grandeur. Recognising the artistic excellence, the Kota saris were accorded with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in the year 2005.

Saris are more than just another type of clothing. They represent the Indian Feminist Movement in Pre-Independence India. The spread of colonization, in India, had greatly influenced the perception of saris. The colonizers believed in covering women from head to toe as a sign of respect.

This belief led to styling a sari in the way we now know. Between 150 to 170 years ago, petticoats and blouses were introduced as part of the sari attire. In order to get work from the British, local people had to obey to their rules of this particular dressing code.

For some, it was obvious that this regulation was also a type of oppression. In 1870s, Satyendranath Tagore's wife, Gyanodanandini, adopted the Parsi's way of adorning a saree. She thus had an influence in the modern look of styling a saree, which is followed till date.
