Sometimes we wonder how much of a textile's story survives by the time it reaches someone's wardrobe.
The cotton was grown somewhere. The yarn was spun by someone. The loom was set up by hands that learned the craft from the generation before them. And every knot, every thread, every small imperfection carries a piece of that journey.

When we work with artisans, we aren't just working with a production system. We're working with people, families, skills, histories, and aspirations.
That's why we often say that what comes off as a handloom is not just a product.

It's an heirloom.

And perhaps that's what luxury means to us - knowing the story behind what you hold, and knowing that the people who made it had agency in the process.

There was a time when Jamdani was considered so precious that it adorned royal courts and travelled across the world as one of the finest muslins ever woven. And even today, every Jamdani motif continues to be created the same way - patiently, by hand, one extra weft at a time.

Unlike printed or embroidered surfaces, Jamdani motifs are woven directly into the fabric during the weaving process. Every small flower, geometric form, stripe, or motif is individually inserted by the weaver, requiring immense skill, concentration, and time. What looks delicate on the surface carries hours of precision behind it.

For us, Jamdani is more than a textile. It is a living craft practice sustained by generations of weavers who continue to preserve and reinterpret it.
We work closely with Jamdani weavers to develop textiles across motifs, colours, scales and custom applications for brands and designers.

When we talk about working with artisan communities, the conversation cannot stop at “fair wages.”
Because in today’s market realities, even fair trade wages often translate into little more than subsistence incomes.

The real question we need to keep asking is:
Are we only creating labour opportunities?
Or are we helping build agency, ownership, decision-making, and long-term capacity within craft communities?

At Karghewale, this distinction matters deeply to us.
Because labour alone may sustain production for a while but agency is what sustains craft traditions, communities, and the next generation of craft practitioners.

And perhaps this is one of the most important conversations our sector needs to have today.
