A down jacket isn’t just about the down. Every layer has a job.

The outer fabric protects against the elements, the inner fabric keeps things comfortable and the insulation traps warm air.

Now, we’re oversimplifying things a bit, but denier and GSM offer a useful starting point. Lower-denier fabrics tend to be lighter, softer and more supple, offering greater flexibility and a more comfortable feel against the body. Depending on the construction, they can also allow greater air permeability, helping heat and moisture move through the fabric. Higher-denier fabrics generally offer greater robustness and abrasion resistance, with the potential for better wind resistance depending on the GSM, weave and construction.

From 7D ultralight outers to 40D waterproof fabrics, the choice is always a balance between weight, warmth, packability and durability.
