Travel tales
In December 2022, my family and I visited the interiors of West Bengal. Nestled adjacent to the Joypur forest is the town of Bishnupur, known for its traditional terracotta architecture and handicrafts. This town is a treasure trove of temples, majestic structures popping at the end of every lane. As the name of the place suggests, the temples here are dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
The land flourished under the rule of the Malla dynasty. Under their patronage these temples were built across 700 years. Under the guidance of the dynasty, the rich weaving tradition of Baluchari also prospered. The motifs of the saris were highly influenced by the temple carvings, including scenes from the Ramayan and Mahabharata. However, with the advent of the British rule started the descent of the dynasty and the weaving industry.
Efforts to revive the industry started post independence. Techniques of weaving has changed over the years to make it more modern and faster. However, what these artisans really require are patrons to appreciate their art.
