LoomKatha Design | Weave | Market | Sustain Revival of this home- based industry provides in-situ employment to them.

LoomKatha connects rural handloom weavers and craftsmen to the global market, enabling greater economic value of the product to be transferred directly back to the producer. Our focus lies on discovering those crafts that are on the verge of extinction, nurturing them back to like through skill development programs and linking the practioners to sustainable markets across the globe

India has ove

r 12 million skilled handloom weavers and 8 milllion handicraft artisans, the largest such work-force in the world. However, artisans lack formal education and modern marketing skills. They generally operate in a rural environment that is remote and inaccessible to the end consumer. Hence, LoomKatha's aim is to adopt an intensive 360 approach to re-generating and sustaining the livelihoods of the artisans we work with. In addition to technical training, we aim to equip our small community of artisans with business management skills to tackle today's market efficiently. Our focus is to create small clusters of excellent craftsmanship that not only create beautiful products for our customers but also become efficiently-run micro-enterprises. In our ideal world, we would like each of our artisan clusters to become sustainable business units within 3 years so that we can divert our expertise to other areas--and thus, expand the scope of our developmental model as well as discover new products for you, our consumer. A LoomKatha product is not just a thing of beauty, it is a tangible ratification of an artisan's work. We hope you use them with the same pride and joy with which they were created.

“संस्कार हा असा दागिना आहे जो वेगळा परिधान करावा लागत नाही पण दिसतो”
(Your culture is an ornament that adorns you invisibly, an ode to your values and heritage.)
These are the beautiful Marathi lines used by to speak about her culturally rooted ensemble for the Ambani wedding.
An ensemble crafted and curated by the super talented Ateev Anand of that had as its centre-piece, a beautiful Himroo shaloo, woven at LoomKatha’s Himroo centre in Aurangabad.

Handcrafted by artisan weaver Rubina Begum, this stunning Himroo shawl is made from recycled cotton and zari, in a classic design that seeks inspiration from a traditional Himroo jaal. The shawl is paired with Re Ceremonial’s Adaa choli also woven in Himroo, meticulously hand-embroidered with glass beads. ‘औरंगाबाद की इस रिवायत को बचाकर रखना हमारी ज़िम्मेदारी है, इसके अलावा कभी कुछ और करने की इच्छा नहीं हुई’ (It is our responsibility to preserve this tradition of Aurangabad, I never felt like doing anything else). –Master weaver Majid Shaikh

Majid bhai began weaving in the year 1963 when he was just 8 years old as an apprentice of Ustad Mohd Salim. Over the decades, he has seen the glorious heights of the craft–when Himroo fabrics were woven for the grand opus Mughal E Azam–to the ebbing away of the original kaarkhanas and the weavers. Yet, through everything he continues to weave, his skills and devotion to the craft the only reason it is alive today. Read the fascinating story of the reticent Majeed bhai in our latest blog post. The story of 5 years in 5 jackets! When Susan, the powerhouse founder of found us through an article in Hand/Eye Magazine in 2019 we never imagined it would be the start of a long and beautiful collaboration. Over the years, Susan, and her talented Design Head Marisa have constantly supported and challenged us to push the boundaries for Himroo. Our initial couple of jackets were stylish cuts made from the only 2 designs we could weave at that time— the Old Rose Himroo and the Kaagaz Ka Jaal. We then moved on to making more complex designs and Team Ibu also found new and innovative ways to use our fabrics— beginning with a shorter blue jacket that used 3 different designs to the piece de resistance we made last year— a complicated kimono incorporating no less than 10 Himroo patterns! There’s a completely new style in the works this year and we can’t wait to see how it will turn out! Thank you for walking with us on this journey

“Congratulations! I’m so glad the word Himroo is being circulated everywhere! It has gone viral.”—Ateev

Monday morning started with this amazing message from , the founder of luxury brand

The reason? A regal Himroo brocade woven by LoomKatha and crafted into a bespoke jacket designed by Ateev was just seen on the red carpet of Cannes. It was worn by actress who was present with her husband and actor Naseeruddin Shah for special screening of the film Manthan.

This stunning fabric was handwoven by our very own Ajju Bhai, one of the superstar weavers in Aurangabad and meticulously designed into a customized blouse jacket by Re Ceremonial, Ateev’s brand. The elegant, sophisticated style and heritage fabric stood out amidst the bling, garnering widespread admiration and kudos.

Originating in the 13th century in Aurangabad, Himroo is made from silk and cotton yarns, featuring elaborate designs with motifs like paisleys, marigolds and vines. LoomKatha has played a pivotal role in bringing this exquisite art form back to life, through the revival of the defunct looms and sustained support to the weavers over the last 5 years.

Our collaboration with Re Ceremonial, resulted in a masterpiece that seamlessly blends heritage and contemporary fashion. The fabric was woven on the loom at our facility using recycled cotton yarns in an elaborate brocade jaal in zari which was then dip-dyed in Sappan, a natural dye extracted from the Sappan or Redwood known for its therapeutic properties. The lavender blended in perfectly with the stunning zari jaal design inspired by vintage Ottoman textiles.

This partnership highlights the potential of traditional weaves in modern haute couture, showcasing Himroo’s timeless appeal on an international platform and
reiterates the fact that an art form never loses its soul.

Thank you Ateev Anand and team for this amazing opportunity. Looking ahead with hope and optimism!
