THE ARCHIVES | Chapter Two

Long before social media, before fashion websites, before instant global recognition, there was one publication that the global fashion industry watched…

PROMOSTYL.

To be featured in its pages meant that your work wasn’t following trends.
It was shaping them.

PROMOSTYL wasn’t a fashion magazine.

It was one of the world’s most respected trend forecasting agencies, studying culture, society and design to predict what fashion would become nearly 18 months before it reached the runway.

Paris. London. New York. Tokyo.

This was where the future of fashion was imagined and Ritu Beri was part of the story.

In 1997, Ritu Beri became the first Indian designer to be featured in Aquastyl PROMOSTYL’s forecast special edition.

It was an extraordinary moment.

For the first time, Indian design was recognised as a creative force influencing the future trend of global fashion.

PROMOSTYL’s team travelled the world searching for emerging talent and new ideas.

To know they had discovered the work of Ritu Beri, and believed it belonged as a global trend forecast, was unreal.

Beri's dream was never just to build a label.

It was to position India on the international fashion map.

Every collection was an attempt to create a dialogue between India and the world, combining craftsmanship, innovation and contemporary vision in a language everyone could understand.

Looking back, we realise, this was far more than being in a publication.

It was one of the earliest signs that Indian fashion could inspire the world.

A proud milestone for India.
It was a new chapter in a journey that was only just beginning.

THE ARCHIVES | Chapter One

Every journey has a beginning.

Before the couture shows, before Avenue Montaigne, before becoming the first Indian designer to present couture in Paris, there was one door I knocked on.

In 1994, I had the privilege of meeting the legendary François Lesage. What began with a visit to his atelier at 13 Rue de la Grange Batelière, Paris, became a mentorship, a friendship, and one of the defining moments of my career.

Looking back, I realise Paris didn’t happen overnight. It was built on trust, and the people who believed in me before the world knew my name.

This is where my Paris story begins.

One doorway. One meeting. One conversation that changed the course of my thinking….& life!

Meeting the legend, who became a mentor and, over time, my dear friend. His generosity of spirit was as remarkable as his extraordinary talent

Inside the atelier.

Every table, every sketch, every embroidery frame carried decades of craftsmanship and imagination…walking through these rooms felt like walking through the living history of couture itself.

Founded by Albert Lesage and transformed into the world’s most celebrated embroidery house by François Lesage, this atelier preserved one of the greatest legacies of haute couture. Here, extraordinary embroideries were brought to life for the most iconic fashion houses in the world from Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Lacroix to Chanel, Dior, Schiaparelli, Balenciaga and many others.

This was the very first photograph François Lesage and I ever took together, on the day we met in 1994. We stood against a pinboard wall filled with his photographs with legends like Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Lacroix.
Never, in my wildest dreams, did I imagine that one day my own photograph would find its place on that wall.

Looking back, this wasn’t just the beginning of a friendship. It was the beginning of a journey that changed my life forever.

A master at work.

Watching François Lesage create was a lesson in precision and a pursuit of perfection.

After our first meeting, we stayed in touch, and over

The archives speak. Thank you, DietSabya®. Pardon my French, but in couture’s endless game of who did it first?, let’s talk about who actually did it first. That would be Ritu Beri.

A protégée of embroidery maestro François Lesage, she became the first Indian designer invited as a guest designer on the Haute Couture calendar. She is, and always will be, THAT girl. Very First Lady of the Universe-coded.

On 17 July 1999, she presented her debut couture collection (Fall 1999/2000) at the Indian Embassy in Paris, a venue that would go on to become the backdrop for several of her shows. Behind the runway sat the now-famous Padmapani mural from the Ajanta caves. Twenty-seven years later, the same mural has the girls (grown men) fighting. Foreshadowing? Perhaps. Mrs. Beri has always possessed a curious kind of clairvoyance, the ability to spot the future of Indian fashion and arrive there before anyone else even knew the destination.

The funds were scarce. Even the models had no shoes, only feet dyed in blood-red alta. But this was an era when fashion fairy tales still had a little magic left in them. Hope and audacity could still outrun reality. Unknown designers could still assemble guest lists that included Suzy Menkes, who would go on to rave about Beri in the International Herald Tribune. Those bare red feet became symbols of sensuality. The saris and dresses were hypnotic. The audience was captivated.

Until then, the idea of India in fashion had largely been interpreted through European designers and legacy maisons. This was one of the first moments an Indian designer seized control of the lens through which the Indian story would be told. So now, while everyone wants to be the blueprint, we’re forgetting who first paved the road from Delhi to Paris. Whose ateliers cracked open the couture calendar and made space for the generations of Indian designers who followed.

In an exclusive tête-à-tête with DS, Miss ma’am Beri reflects on the realities of being first, the costs, the courage, and the satisfaction of making history.
