Weaving Tradition into Learning: MFM Students Explore Goa’s Handicraft & Handloom Heritage
Immersing in the rich heritage of handicrafts and handlooms, where every thread tells a story and every weave holds tradition—a journey of culture, craftsmanship, and learning.
Today, Master of Fashion Management students from NIFT Mumbai had the unique opportunity to visit the Industrial Handicraft and Handloom Co-operative Society in Pato, Panaji, Goa. The students interacted with talented artisans, gaining firsthand insights into the intricate world of crochet, embroidery, and traditional textile arts.
The delegation was warmly welcomed by Vice Chairman Deepak Narvekar, Secretary Shashikant Punaji, and Treasurer Suresh Sawant, who provided an in-depth briefing about the Society’s mission and its role in preserving Goan handicrafts. The visit was accompanied by Professor Yashwant Misale, and best wishes were extended by Chairperson Smt. Vijayadevi Rane, who emphasized the Society’s commitment to supporting the next generation of fashion professionals.
Students witnessed a live demonstration of exquisite crochet and embroidery techniques, admiring the artistry and skill of the women artisans who have kept these traditions alive for generations. The experience offered them valuable insights into handmade craftsmanship, sustainable fashion, and ethical production, all of which will enrich their studies at NIFT Mumbai.
As part of their academic journey, the students will continue exploring other facets of Goa’s traditional industries, further deepening their understanding of heritage textiles, local craftsmanship, and entrepreneurship in fashion.
Through this visit, they not only gained practical knowledge but also developed a deep appreciation for the artisans who weave culture into every creation.
