I was invited to speak at an event hosted by the Indian Association of Secretaries and Administrative Professionals on the topic of Sustainability in Fashion and Apparel. After spending 23 years in the telecom industry, I had a certain perception of the secretarial and administrative profession. I believed their role was largely about executing tasks, following top-down instructions, and ensuring things got done efficiently. However, meeting this incredible group of professionals in Pune completely changed that perception. It was a true paradigm shift.
What stood out wasn't just their enthusiasm, but their genuine curiosity to learn and drive change within their organisations. Their questions went far beyond theory: What is the impact of sustainability in fabrics and apparel? How can I contribute? What is slow fashion? How can we reuse, repurpose, and recycle? What innovations are happening in sustainable uniforms and T-shirts? Their proactive mindset and determination to make their workplaces more sustainable were truly inspiring. I walked away with more than just the satisfaction of sharing my knowledge—I left with a renewed appreciation for the role these professionals play in shaping forward-looking organisations, and I learned as much from them as they did from me.
