Ponduru Khadi Bhandar – A Legacy Woven from the Spirit of Swadeshi

When Mahatma Gandhi gave the call for the Swadeshi Movement, it was not merely a political strategy — it was an economic revolution. He urged India to spin its own yarn, weave its own cloth, and build a self-reliant nation from its villages upward. The spinning wheel became a symbol of dignity, decentralization, and empowerment. Khadi was not just fabric; it was freedom woven into thread.

Even after India attained independence, Gandhi’s vision remained unfinished work — a call to build rural livelihoods, protect traditional skills, and strengthen local economies through indigenous production.

It was in this spirit that Kakarla Pydilingam, inspired by Gandhian philosophy, dedicated his life to the development of Ponduru Khadi.

The Man Who Elevated Ponduru Khadi

In the quiet weaving town of Ponduru in Andhra Pradesh, known for producing some of the finest handspun khadi in India, Pydilingam became a transformative force in the post-independence era.

At a time when industrial textiles were rapidly expanding, he chose to stand with the weavers.

With deep technical knowledge and years of hands-on experience, he:

Enhanced production capacity to unprecedented volumes

Developed new varieties and textures in fine khadi

Strengthened artisan networks in and around Ponduru

Created stable markets across different corners of India

His contribution was not limited to commerce. He restructured livelihoods. Thousands of weavers and their families experienced economic stability because of his leadership. He brought organization, scale, and innovation into a traditionally fragmented sector.

Most importantly, he helped introduce Ponduru Khadi — globally admired for its fineness and softness — to wider markets, giving the small weaving town national recognition.

He did not simply trade in fabric.
He built dignity into livelihoods.

1994 – A Marketplace with a Mission

Carrying forward this powerful legacy, his son Kakarla Viswanadham established Ponduru Khadi Bhandar in 1994 in the heart of Visakhapatnam, at RTC Complex, Dwarakanagar.

The objective was clear:

To directly connect rural weavers with urban consumers while preserving authenticity.

The store soon became a trusted destination for pure, eco-friendly handwoven khadi. Customers came not only for clothing but for credibility. Every product represented transparency — from yarn to loom to shelf.

Unfortunately, after Viswanadham’s untimely demise in 2004, the store entered a long period of stagnation under lease management. The structure survived, but the original mission weakened.

Yet, legacies rooted in purpose do not disappear easily.

2025 – The Revival of a Heritage Brand

In mid-2025, I, Kakarla Rajasekhar, stepped back into the business — not merely as an heir, but as a professional committed to rebuilding a generational vision.

With formal qualifications in business management and over five years of experience in rural and social development across Andhra Pradesh, I had previously transformed underprivileged communities into structured business enterprises. Later, as a professional analyst in a global business consultancy firm, I worked on strategic plans for startups across industries.

But this return was deeply personal.

I renovated the store.
I restructured operations.
I reconnected with weaver communities.
I brought in experienced professionals in retail and production.

The goal was not just revival — it was rejuvenation.
