viewed simply as the winter solstice in the western world, this night holds deep symbolism + history for iranian people; an ancient zoroastrian festival held on the longest + darkest night of the year.

shab-e yaldā is one of the most important ancient persian traditions. this festival is also called ‘shab-e challeh’ (شب چله) or the ‘night of the forty,’ because it marks the beginning of the first forty days of winter, believed to be the coldest + toughest days of the year.

on this night, families gather to to pass the darkest night of the year in good company + celebrate the ‘rebirth of the sun’ the following day, known as ‘khurram ruz’ (the day of the sun). the festival is celebrated as the triumph of light over darkness 🌌✨

according to folklore, eating fruits saved from the summer harvest on shab-e yaldā strengthens one against the harsh winter + the next summer’s heat. 🍉

in the dark of the night, families bring light + joy into the world by reading divinations + fortunes from hafez’s poetry in preparation for the sun’s rebirth + the end of the longest night of the year. 🌍💫🌴

🔥 happy chaharshanbe soori / چهارشنبه‌سوری 🔥

the ‘chaharshanbe soori’ fire festival occurs on the eve of the final wednesday of the year, in preparation for the new year—Norouz.

the festival is dedicated to ridding oneself of the ill + bad luck of the past year + ushering in warmth, health, and good luck for the new year ahead.

jumping over fires is part of this Zoroastrian tradition + symbolizes the transfer of bad energy into the fire + receiving strength + good energy in return.

the tradition is borne from the ancient Iranian festival of Hamaspathmaedaya, which occurred on the last five days of the year in honor of the spirits of the dead. ancestors believed that spirits of the dead would come for reunion during this time + were bidden a formal ritual farewell at the dawn of the new year 🔥🌙

👑more info👑: ‘shahbanu,’ which literally translates to ‘lady king’ was the title for queen consort in Persian + other Iranian languages. the two Sassanian empresses regnant, Boran + Azarmidokht, c. 630, were the last two that carried the title before Farah Pahlavi, the wife of the last shah of Iran assumed the title on being crowned queen in 1967 for the first time since the muslim conquest of Persia in the 7th century.

as an empress during Sassanid times, the principal shahbanu was also titled ‘bambishnan bambishn’ (‘queen of queens’) analogous to the emperor's title ‘shahanshah’ (lit. ‘king of kings’) to distinguish her from the other queens in the royal household.

today I had the absolute pleasure of meeting + supporting some fantastic iranian crafters, entrepreneurs, business owners + artists at the ‘koocheh dc pop-up’ on u street! 🧿✨🛍
