Our proposal for an Iceland greenhouse restaurant competition at the end of last year.
The greenhouse restaurant is a timber courtyard house in Mythavn Iceland, referencing the natural forms of craters blending into the landscape. Driven by principles of permaculture, the ambition is to bring people closer to the unique food production ecosystem in Iceland while experiencing the features of the magnificent landscape, in particular the views of the Myvatn natural hot spring and Hverfjall Volcano. As a long term goal, the building aims to heighten our consciousness of food/ energy production and consumption, supporting a cause for sustainable tourism. The greenhouse continues various ‘solar zones’ letting a variety of crops to grow in this setting giving a range of solar environments from 3-4 hours of filtered morning sunlight on the east to 6-7 hours of direct sunlight on the south and west. While it is possible to program the grow lights to suit different conditions, our design seeks a passive strategy as a baseline.
The main dining area is situated on the elevated northern end of the courtyard, with triple glazed window (prevents fogging) permitting views towards the landscape. Here, the view of the hot springs and volcano in the distance is celebrated with the flanking greenhouses.
