The fabric ermisino takes its name from Hormuz, a city in Persia. It appears in many Renaissance paintings, such as “The Building of Solomon’s Temple” by Santi di Tito, located in the Chapel of San Luca - also known as the Chapel of the Painters - within the complex of the Basilica of the Santissima Annunziata, in Florence.

In the fresco, it is depicted in all its iridescent beauty as Solomon’s mantle, as he oversees the construction of the Temple of Jerusalem.
Just as Solomon directs the building of the Temple of Jerusalem, Cosimo I is portrayed as the “great architect” of the Tuscan state and the founder of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, which was originally based in this very chapel.

Ermisino has been one of the most frequently depicted fabrics in art history - a testament to its enduring, timeless beauty.
