G-Star’s Archive Inspires New Archetypes Collection

G-Star Raw’s extensive archive not only chronicles three decades of denim fashion but also serves as a time capsule of workwear and military uniforms.

The Dutch brand’s latest collection called Archetype aims to capture the essence of some of the most remarkable pieces. The collection spans 25 garments reworked through “refined materials, modern techniques, and purposeful detailing” G-Star stated.

Storytelling plays a key role in the collection. Each garment includes an internal label. Denim pieces explain the fabric and others trace style’s history.

Denim styles include the G-S026 Deegie selvedge jean and G-S020 Marseille selvedge blazer, both made with untreated raw 14.25 oz fabric produced on original 1960s shuttle looms. G-Star said the blazer is an example of how garments that began as a uniform have become a personal statement.

The G-S018 Bend selvedge jean is made with from 16.7 oz. Japanese selvedge denim. The G-S028 Regular selvedge shirt is crafted from Japanese selvedge chambray.

“Denim started as pure function, made to last. Then it became a language of self-expression,” G-Star stated. The brand noted that the selvedge denim was sourced from “specialist mills in Japan and Italy, chosen for their durable structure, depth, and the way they transform over time.”

Other denim pieces in the collection include the Dakota selvedge jacket and the G-S023 Modson selvedge chino. Both styles are made with regenerative cotton.

The G-S002 Field Jacket, modeled after a style worn by U.S. 10th Mountain Division, and the G-S005 Dismounted Raincoat, based on a 1940s U.S. military raincoat, are among the non-denim pieces in the Archetype collection.

Other highlights include a cotton overshirt inspired by a vintage U.S. Marine Corps design, an organic cotton T-shirt based on military undershirts and M-51 cargo pants modeled after Inspired M-1951 shell pants. The bottoms are modernized with adjustable hem drawstrings.
