Received quite a few messages about this piece, so I decided to make a post to share some of the details with you!
This little lady has a cute little squirrel hallmark which indicates that it is Swiss 14k gold 🐿
If you look at the ribbon & cascading details, they are actually rose colored gold against the yellow gold🎀
This lovely pocket watch is circa early 1900s, composed of art Edwardian details✨
She is also bejeweled with emeralds, rubies, and rose cut diamonds💖
Meant to be worn as a pendant, as it is the perfect size and not very heavy.
However if desired, the watch movement be removed & converted into a lovely locket💘

Decoding mourning jewelry...
“J.Q Miles ob 25 Jan 1833 aet 61 although lost to sight to memory dear”

The abbreviation “ob” is the Latin word “obiit” meaning, died.
**therefore Miles died 25 January, 1833
•
The abbreviation “aet” is the Latin word “ætat” meaning, aged.
**Miles was 61 years of age when he died
•
Black enamel was often used to symbolize the mourning of a spouse, whereas white enamel was used to mourn a child or a young non-married person.
**Therefore it is added clarity, that this ring was worn by a mourning widowed wife due to the age of the man (61), enamel color, and inscription.

Why was cut steel jewelry invented?

Cut-steel jewelry was introduced during the Elizabethan period in England.
Around 1759 in France, this type of jewelry became very popular because it substituted all of the hidden and donated jewelry that was demanded by King Louis XV, in order to fund the French military during the Seven Years War.

How was it made?

Each stud had to be faceted by hand and then riveted in place on a metal plate.
Every faceted stud was polished, so that it mimicked a faceted stone that sparkles & refracts light.

My favorite part when acquiring a new ring is to research everything that I possibly can🤓
This Georgian beauty was made in London in 1792. The same year when the 1,000 year old French monarchy was abolished. This led to the demise of Marie Antoinette & King Louis XVI which were then infamously condemned to the guillotine months later🥀
