How can maker spaces strengthen communities? 🌍✨

We know that craft and maker spaces can transform neighbourhoods. But how do these collaborative environments actually operate in practice to foster resilience and social inclusion?

Led by ECA Programmes Manager Rachel Kelly, the next make-a-thek Community Call, hosted by Global Innovation Gathering and the European Crafts Alliance (ECA) , will explore how creative initiatives act as hubs for civic engagement.

In just a few weeks, we’ll be setting off on Bus Tour #2!

This time, our travelling makerspace is heading to the Baltic States!

Just like on our first tour, we’ll host workshops, visit makerspaces, connect with local initiatives and collect stories that show how creativity, repair and community can shape a sustainable future.

We can’t wait to discover what’s waiting for us and to share it all with you. 😍💜

A little photo dump from our stop in Großschönau. 🧵📸

As part of the make-a-thek Bus Tour, we explored two incredible places where textile heritage is still alive: the and the Damast Museum.

From traditional weaving techniques to the history of damask production, we learned how generations of knowledge continue to shape the region today.

These are just a few snapshots from a day full of conversations, craftsmanship and textile history. 💛

One of the highlights of our make-a-thek bus tour was our stop at the Maker Faire Česká republika in Vrchlabí. 🚍✨

Maker Faire Česká republika is more than just an event - it’s a place where curious beginners, experienced makers, inventors, artists, families, and visionaries come together to turn ideas into reality, explore new technologies, and inspire one another.

We were especially happy to meet up with the Make more team, exchange ideas, and connect with fellow makers who share our passion for creativity, innovation, and hands-on learning.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared their projects, and joined the conversation 💜

During our first make-a-thek bus tour, we spoke with visual artist Katharina Forster about her exhibition Fashion Revisited.

Her ongoing project will only be complete once 1,134 clothing labels have been sewn onto a single tea bag—commemorating the 1,134 garment workers who lost their lives in the 2013 Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh.

🚐 Throwback to one of the first stops of the make-a-thek Bus Tour in Bad Belzig.

At the LiF co-living space, we hosted our first public Clothes Swap and Repair event. 🧵♻️

What stayed with us most were the conversations around circular fashion, everyday habits, and how repair can become something we do together rather than alone.

This early moment of Matty on Tour helped set the tone for the journey: activating public spaces as sites for community learning, repair culture and making.

📣 Big news: we’ve just launched our YouTube channel

🎥 From now on, you can follow the bus tour across Germany, Czechia and Poland with videos, stories and behind-the-scenes moments from the road.

Libraries are no longer just places to borrow books—they are becoming vibrant community hubs where people can meet, learn, create, repair, and connect.

This new Horizon Magazine article explores how libraries across Europe are reimagining their role as inclusive "third spaces" that support creativity, collaboration, and community innovation. The article features insights from Barbara Kieslinger, make-a-thek Project Coordinator, as well as Patrycja Przybylska from one of the project's pilot libraries in Poland.

Together, they share how make-a-thek is transforming libraries into makerspaces focused on circular fashion, crafts, repair, and community co-creation.

We're proud to see make-a-thek highlighted as part of this growing European movement that places people, skills, and sustainability at the heart of the library experience.
