TOM FORD - Tom Ford joined Gucci back in 1990 & was appointed as creative director of the fashion house in 1994. His first runway collection
for Gucci, in 1995, was met with rave reviews, & he was catapulted into icon status the following year, when his Fall/Winter 1996 collection received huge international acclaim, enthralling critics & public alike & changing the face of fashion overnight. A whirlwind of successes followed over the next few years, culminating in Gucci taking over the house of Yves Saint Laurent in 1999 & appointing Ford as Creative Director & head designer of the house's YSL Rive Gauche collection. Ford's midas touch continued at YSL, with one after another of his collections receiving critical acclaim. It began to look as if Tom Ford & the house of Gucci could truly do no wrong... until, in late 2003 the fashion industry was rocked by the news that Tom & Gucci had disagreed over creative control & that the two would be parting ways. In a press release of the time, a Gucci spokesperson was famously quoted as saying that "the label was bigger than the man". Tom's swansongs for the houses of Gucci & Yves Saint Laurent, in Fall/Winter 2004, would again be proclaimed masterpieces & Tom Ford runway pieces from both houses would become instant collector's items, fetching huge sums at auctions worldwide. Sadly, it would be another seven long years before the womens' fashion industry would again be touched by Tom's genius, when in one of the most highly anticipated fashion events of all time, in Fall/Winter 2011 Tom Ford held a "by invitation only" private launch of the very first collection from his own label. Today, Tom's star continued to shine as brightly as ever, with Tom Ford products turning over in excess of one billion dollars in 2014 alone, &, as early pieces from his Gucci & Yves Saint Laurent days get increasingly rarer, they've become more collectible than ever...
