The popularity of blue, the foundation of men’s wardrobes, began in the 1700s when new dyes made it possible to substitute black as the colour for formal suits: blue has more depth, more balance, it is easier to wear. In the 1900s, it became the definitive colour of menswear, from a work suit to a travel blazer because it is able to give a sense of sobriety without severity. The success of blue comes from its versatility: dark blue for formal occasions, light blue for summer events, always sophisticated in the shades in between. An absolute classic that continues to define contemporary elegance.

Today, we are looking at seersucker, a summer fabric that is distinguished by the light, irregular rippling of the surface. The name, which comes from the Persian words shir and shakar, “milk and sugar”, already describes its nature: alternating smooth and puckered surfaces. This movement originates in a variation of stretched and curled yarns, creating a structure that is raised from the wearer’s body and allows the air to circulate.
And it was because of this freshness that the British East India Company adopted this fabric in the 1800s, using it for work clothes in the torrid climate, until it also won over the gentlemen of the upper middle-classes with its relaxed elegance. Rippled, light, always ready to accompany you on the hottest days with stylishness and nonchalance.

In the Vitale Barberis Archives a Claude Frère sample book from the early 1910s opens a window on Berlin: a growing city that was dynamic, vital and extremely interested in sports. On the tennis courts and in the clubs of the German capital, white côteline was a must-have as a type of uniform. This pure white fabric decorated with thin coloured stripes speaks of an epoch through fashion, sport and the codes of belonging to a society. These are the unexpected journeys that the sample books preserved in the Archives continue to make possible.

A small piece of fabric can hold the story of an entire life. In 1860, among the pages we can probably trace back to Savile Row’s Henry Poole, a “Brown Camel Hair” appears, purchased by “Prince of Sansevero”. Behind this order is Michele di Sangro, the 11th and last Prince of San Severo. A man who, after a personal misfortune, would find new interests in England, new relationships and maybe even a new way of looking towards the future. This small swatch of fabric is still preserved in the Vitale Barberis Canonico Archives. However, of the overcoat it belonged to, all trace has been lost.

A second skin, a shade that works together with naturalness and softness in the cut. Beige originates from the naturalness of the fibres in colours created by nature itself, but fashion has translated it into a sophisticated language. In the early 1900s, when the palette became lighter and a new way of interpreting daytime wear emerged, beige became the colour of equilibrium: understated, luminous, impeccable. Worsteds, gabardines and lightweight wools took it ever closer to the concept of subtle, sober elegance. It is a tone that does not seek attention: it wins it by default.
