FEB31ST -
Kireka Collection - A story of sustainability and resilience.

Through a connection with the charity ‘Meeting Point International’ we were made aware of a project in the slums of Kampala where the Acholi women of Kireka, driven by the need to protect and provide for their children, rediscovered an ancient technique - harvesting bark of the Ficus Natalensis tree to create a unique sustainable material.

The tree bark is shaved from the tree, pummelled with wooden mallets in a slow rhythmic process before being left to harden and dry. Once fully dry this bark-cloth material becomes durable and versatile and can be made into everyday items that can be traded like a currency.

Incredibly the tree regenerates its bark every five years and can be harvested for up to 40 years without harm. After that, it is left to enjoy a peaceful retirement.

Moved by this project we have joined forces with the Kireka community, purchasing this remarkable material to craft a special edition eyewear collection, one that carries an important story of resilience, sustainability, and empowerment.

Proceeds from this collaboration directly support the community, helping to build schools, provide medical facilities, and secure a brighter future for the children of Kireka.

The Kireka collection is available in all FEB31ST shapes and sizes yet instantly recognisably by its raw, textured finish, a tactile reminder of its natural origins.

But what makes these frames truly special is the children of Kireka have personally decorated the bark material, creating vibrant pigmentations by throwing wildflower dyed paint onto the surface in spontaneous, artistic formations. Hidden within the colours, you may even find a small handprint or footprint, a gentle signature of the children whose future helps shape this collection.

All this is possible without having to cut down one single tree. As we say in Italy “Un piccolo taglio di capello” - just a little haircut.
