🇬🇧A few weeks ago, I made a last-minute decision to visit the exhibition by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota at the MAO in Turin, which closed on June 26th.

Renowned particularly for her striking immersive installations—which fill museum spaces with intricate webs of thread entangled with everyday objects—the artist explores profound themes in all her work, such as human fragility, connections, and the concepts of life and death.
The exhibition aimed to trace the artist's entire body of work and its evolution over time; it was truly impressive—at times unsettling, yet deeply fascinating.

For the occasion, I had originally prepared a themed outfit, but it was too heavy for June, so I ultimately opted for one of my favorite hitoe ensembles: a cotton kimono, a tsumugi silk obi featuring lotus leaves and water striders, and aqua-green accessories to echo the aquatic theme of the obi itself.

Perché no?

🇬🇧 Summer holidays with yukata? Why not?
It will be enough to choose one or more outfits, with yukata and obi which could be combined with each other (1 yukata and 2 obi is 2 outfits, 2 yukata and 2 obi is 4!) and to have space in your luggage.
The dressing of a yukata, once learned, is not really much longer than a normal preparation and the combinations have been made before leaving!
So, ganbarō!

🇬🇧 Japanese summer kimonos, especially in lightweight, sheer versions like sha, combine freshness and visual lightness, creating an elegant look even in scorching weather. An interesting trend has recently emerged: combinations that revolve around dark colors even in summer, such as black, gray, midnight blue or forest green, to create greater depth and contrast.
This balancing act works well because semi-sheer fabrics keep the overall look light, while dark shades add depth to the outfit. The result is a style that remains summery but it distances itself from the predictability of light tones, opting for a more urban and contemporary elegance.

🇬🇧 A recently born trend is creating more minimalist summer outfits, featuring dark colors and contrasting color accents. This trend is in stark contrast to the majority of summer clothing, which is mostly based on light colors and bright patterns. The theory behind creating more minimalist summer outfits is similar to the "monotone" approach: simply choose two or three reference colors to coordinate accessories, kimono, and obi. The decorative patterns on kimonos and obis are relative, as long as they are consistent with the color scheme. Solid-colored kimonos or kimonos with geometric patterns will certainly emphasize the idea of cohesion and regularity. Choosing a contrasting color is very important because it will be the most eye-catching element in your outfit.
In the pictures, I've created a combination of black and white, with red accents. The accessories were chosen in black and white to create greater depth. It's always surprising to see how the world of kimono is always full of insights into color theory.

🇬🇧 Morning glory (asagao 朝顔) pattern is a very popular traditional design on kimono and obi worn in July and August.
Featuring trumpet flowers on vinelike stems it creates a fresh and elegant look.
Since it blooms in the morning and closes in the evening, it symbolizes the ephemeral and the beauty of youth.
I don't own big elements with asagao apart from a haneri and a hair accessory I made recently.
So I started from these elements to create the rest of the kitsuke, with a ro kimono with shibori kikyō flowers (it is out of season but it was the only suitable one) and a hakata ori hanhaba obi.

🇬🇧 The scorching heat is terrible. But it is even more terrible when you would like to cover yourself in fabric and wrap yourself with the obi.
Last weekend I minimized the layers and I wore a very lightweight yukata with a heko obi, but in the plain's humid heat it was still a challenge.
This time I tried to insert a little ice pack from the freezer between my padding towels on the back (not directly on the skin) and I must say that it did its duty for a while. It was stiff and a little uncomfortable, but I decided I will look for those made with gel for muscle aches, so the heat won't have me!

🇬🇧 Indigo-dyed yukatas are a real "must have" of the summer season.
The versions with a white background are particularly suitable for the day, while the versions with a blue background are preferable for the evening.
Indigo was introduced to Japan during the Asuka period (538-645) but dyeing techniques were developed later  during Muromachi period, after contact with China.
The cultivation of indigo spread rapidly in Japan, especially in Tokushima, considered the homeland of this craft.
Lafcadio Hearn who visited Japan in the late 1800s, said “This country, Japan, is filled with a mysterious blue” (この国日本は、神秘なブルーに満ちた国 Kono kuni Nihon wa, shinpina burū ni michita kuni) precisely to underline the constant presence of this color.
Paradoxically, the end of the 19th century coincided with a moment of decline for indigo, and still today the Japanese are trying to keep this tradition alive with great efforts, as it involves artisans and farmers.

🇮🇹 Felice Tanabata!
Cosa scriverete sui vostri tanzaku?

🇬🇧 Happy Tanabata!
Today Japan celebrates this festival dedicated to stars and wishes. As the name suggests (七夕 Tanabata literally "seventh night") it is held on the seventh night of the seventh month of the year. The legend at the origin of the festival has as protagonists the weaver princess Orihime (織 姫), represented by the star Vega and the shepherd Hikoboshi (彦 星), symbolized by the star Altair, who on this night meet at the sides of the Milky Way, once a year. Their love had distracted them from their daily tasks and for this they were punished by the King of Heaven, being separated for the rest of the year.
On this occasion in Japan, people usually wear yukata and attend matsuri held at local shrines.
During this special night when the stars align, the Japanese express their wishes, writing them on paper pendants called tanzaku (短冊), which they hang on the bamboo branches, so that the stars can grant them.
What will you write on your tanzaku?
