Music is almost always playing at Fortuny, fueling our souls and providing the soundtrack to our creativity. As a lifelong musician, I wanted to honor the significant role music plays in the experience of our lives, so since our first monthly newsletter went out in February 2017, I have curated a playlist to accompany every issue.

Nearly a decade on, it has become an evolving archive. Of what was happening in the world and where we were, of what we made and how we felt about it all. A ray of light entered through the window.

In the darkened studio, the beam cut a bright line through the shadow, illuminating nothing.

Then Fortuny placed a white sheet in its path. The room filled with light.

It was a simple experiment that changed the path of his creative career.

Developed in Fortuny’s historic Venetian factory, the POLPO collection unfolds at the intersection of myth, natural observation, and Venetian material culture. Its patterns and techniques trace ancient etymologies, natural forms, and architectural references, functioning not as ornament alone but as visual meditations on water and motion—designed to shift, breathe, and reveal themselves gradually through light and use.

| The walk to Giudecca |

When the plague finally released its crushing grip on Venice in 1577, fifty thousand people - nearly a third of the city’s population - had died. Yet in the face of such utter devastation, Venetians answered by doing what they do best: they created. While the plague still raged and salvation was far from certain in September of 1576, the Republic vowed that if the city were spared, it would build a church to the Redeemer and return to it in a thanksgiving pilgrimage every year, forever.

Venice has kept its word, and the Venetians have been crossing ever since, renewing the promise rather than merely remembering it.

It is tempting to see the Festa del Redentore as simply a celebration. But underneath the festivity lies something older and more defiant, something that began as Venice’s answer to catastrophe that joins the community in a way that goes beyond just sharing an island. The city understood that the real opposite of death is in creation, and that nothing renews a sense of commitment to our humanity like art and beauty.
