[Glass producing area: Birth of Fukui and Sabae]

Fukui Prefecture is one of the world's three largest eyeglass production areas, along with China and Italy. Masunaga Glasses first started making eyeglass frames in 97% of domestic production in Fukui Prefecture. In 1905 (Meiji 38), the founder Masunaga Gozaemon invited eyeglass craftsmen from Osaka and Tokyo to cultivate engineers with the desire to establish industry in his hometown. It was an industry that was finally found, but initially the public said that Fukui's glasses were a third-class product. Therefore, Gozaemon, who looked to improve technical capabilities and quality, created a system for refining each other's skills by adopting a bookkeeping system and making craftsmen who became full-fledged one after another. As a result, the number of craftsmen gradually increased mainly in Fukui and Sabae, and the eyeglass industry spread throughout the prefecture.
