“Thoughts on Creation”
Artist Statement
When I exchange everyday messages,
“Wishing you a healthy day.”
I find that adding these words has naturally become my habit.
Being healthy is not something to be taken for granted.
It means being able to breathe deeply, feeling tension dissolve, and experiencing a softening of the heart.
I feel that this state is made possible when "clothing"—our closest environment to the body—gently helps us realign our heart and soul.
Health is not for humans alone.
Humans, animals, and the wildflowers beneath our feet; all life flows and connects without stagnation.
It is only within such a state of nature as a whole that true "well-being" can reside.
Gathering the wildflowers that live at my feet, I use the method of bundle dyeing (botanical dyeing) to transfer their traces onto fabric.
By preserving the life of plants as "color" and "presence," and by wearing that radiance once again, I feel as though we can remember that we, too, are a part of nature.
Rather than separating "myself" from the "outside world," I want to convey that everything is continuous through the clothing that exists in the space in between.
As I place myself within the great cycle of nature, I feel through my creative work that I am living as a part of it. For me, true richness lies within such a harmonious practice.
That which humans have created will also, one day, return equally to the earth and circulate into new life.
I pray that the world transforms toward that place, which we have not yet reached.
With that great flow as my guide, I create clothing that allows the wearer to take a sudden, deep breath.
For me, this is a small but certain step toward peace.
