【Pontocho】 When Night Falls in Kyoto
Just a 5-minute walk from SOU・SOU lies a place not to be missed: Pontocho (先斗町).

It is one of Kyoto’s traditional hanamachi (Kagai) districts, known for geiko and maiko, and for its beautifully preserved architecture. The area is also associated with the early development of kabuki as a performing art.

Today, the narrow alley is lined with restaurants and bars. By day, it appears modest and quiet—but at night, lanterns glow and the tightly packed façades come alive, creating a magical atmosphere. From the Kamogawa River, the view is especially enchanting.

A place where tradition and modern life blend seamlessly—much like the spirit of SOU・SOU, born in Kyoto. We invite you to stroll through Pontocho in SOU・SOU’s Kabukimono style.

May 5th is Japan’s Children’s Day. 🎏

Around this time of year, colorful “koinobori” (carp streamers) can be seen flying over rivers, parks, and balconies throughout Japan.

Inspired by the Chinese legend of “The Dragon Gate,” the carp symbolizes perseverance, swimming against the current, and the vitality to soar freely toward the sky. The story of the carp eventually transforming into a dragon also carries wishes for children’s healthy growth and a bright future.

Among SOU・SOU’s collection, the collaboration piece with Ki-Yan Stuzio,“carp is dragon in heaven” echoes this imagery of the carp becoming a dragon.

The vividly illustrated carp swimming powerfully upstream expresses the Japanese appreciation for both strength and beauty.

Seasonal items inspired by koinobori, such as tenugui and tabi socks, are also popular among customers in Japan for their playful colors and designs. If you love Japanese culture, why not bring one home and enjoy a touch of early summer in Japan?

【Kyoto Craftsmanship, Reimagined】 Hasuyui
SOU・SOU collaborates with Kikkabo, the renowned handmade leather workshop based in Kyoto, to create a new bag named “Hasuyui (Lotus Knot).”

Inspired by the lotus flower, “Hasuyui” combines the ease of a drawstring bag with the functionality of a tote, resulting in a design that is both beautiful and practical.

The handles feature a traditional knotting technique known as the Agemaki knot. Reminiscent of flower petals, the floral knot motif symbolizes “wearing the vitality of nature”, and has long been cherished as an auspicious design representing happiness and prosperity.

In addition, the knot structure adopts the iri-gata form, believed to invite good fortune inward — a symbolic design often found in furnishings used at Japanese shrines.

Available in three sizes, this genderless bag brings a subtle Japanese aesthetic to any style. As each piece is carefully handcrafted, restocks may take time once sold out. The good news is that the small and medium sizes are now back in stock on our netshop. More than a bag — a piece of handcrafted art.

【Classical Beauty】 Gorgeous
As a brand that bridges tradition and modern life, SOU・SOU expresses the beauty of Japan's scenery and culture through textile designs.

Our iconic pattern "Gorgeous", composed of squares and octagons with delicate motifs, reflects a sense of classical beauty reminiscent of the cut-out details of traditional gates and antique tiles. From soft pink, the rich emerald green to the cool black color schemes, each colorway is enhanced with subtle touches of silver and gold. The intricate design is also a testament to fine craftsmanship.

A textile that transcends gender, adding a refined yet striking accent to both modern Japanese and Western-style outfits.

Gorgeous(2020, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
A classical pattern composed of squares and octagons,
with stylized floral motifs arranged within.
Though it is an ancient design,
it possesses a fundamental quality that captures people's hearts.
Originally a woven textile pattern,
since it is expressed through printing,
I tried to draw it in a way that feels soft and not heavy.
I believe I was able to create an atmosphere
that is both approachable and gorgeous.

【Monthly Textile Design 2026】
The design theme for 2026's pattern design is "Paper Collage"
Today we'd like to introduce the monthly textile design of April: "Floral Tsumugi".

Created by our textile designer, Mr. Wakisaka, this pattern brings together the texture of traditional Tsumugi weaving with his signature floral motifs. Inspired by the paper collage technique, the deliberately left white edges add a soft, handcrafted charm, giving the design a playful and approachable feel. The fresh, spring-like colors evoke a sense of lightness and joy—capturing the gentle vibrancy of the season in full bloom.

Tabi socks and tenugui in this vibrant monthly texile design are available now!

Floral Tsumugi (2026, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
There is a type of woven textile called tsumugi.
Tsumugi yarn contains natural slubs,
which create a coarse, textured surface
when woven into fabric.
The flower pattern, made by tearing and layering paper,
has a texture reminiscent of tsumugi.
That is why I named it Floral Tsumugi.

Tsumugi Floral (2026, Katsuji Wakisaka)
