When wearing kimono, the collar is folded in half in the middle (if not already tailored to be permanently in half).

Some kimono just have nothing, and you have to hope nothing shifts while you're wearing it.

Most modern kimono have a snap. Simple, easy to figure out. Everyone knows what to do with a snap.

But have you ever seen a kimono with a few loose vertical strings on the inside of collar? This was the more traditional way of securing the collar. There would be one loose end that you could grab and pull, thus bringing the two sides of the collar together.

So if you ever buy a kimono and see these strings, please don't cut them off thinking they're useless. Unlike the loose hem stitching that is present on new/unused kimono, these are strings you for sure want to keep!

Hi everyone. I've gotten an influx of questions, and while I appreciate the support, please be aware that if you're here for anything other than the standard ages for shichi-go-san (3 year old girl, 5 year old boy, 7 year old girl) I cannot help unless you have your own complete outfit. Please note that I'm not a rental shop. I'm just someone certified to dress kimono that just so happens to have some kids outfits that I'm willing to let other people use and some extra accessories for adults if you at least have your own kimono and obi. My original goal of this page was to provide information and pictures for people new and interested in kimono but that didn't have the time or ability to take a class, and dress people for practice if they already had a full set. I apologize if there was any miscommunication about what I can and cannot do. Thank you again!
